We also spoke with @Klarna, @Verizon, @Zendesk and others who say AI is amazing at certain things, but highly limited in others. This is often called the “jagged frontier” as explained by @ml_angelopoulos.
Screenshot from a story that says:

Large language models are rapidly conquering complex tasks in math and coding, but can still fail at comparatively trivial tasks. Researchers call this contradiction in capabilities the “jagged frontier” of AI.

“It might be a Ferrari in math but a donkey at putting things in your calendar,” said Anastasios Angelopoulos, the CEO and cofounder of LMArena, a popular benchmarking tool.

Excerpt from a Washington Post story about Olivia Nuzzi and Ryan Lizza with the following sentence highlighted: This new iteration of Nuzzi, though entertaining, is a backstab not just to her former fiancé, but to all journalists who, toiling for insubstantial compensation, wouldn’t consider getting romantically involved with a source or subject.

A screenshot of a paragraph from a Washington Post story about the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative pulling its funding from a school for low-income students:

The impacts of the shuttering on families and the local school district show the risks for communities that depend on wealthy donors for essential services or support. A billionaire’s change of heart can destabilize vulnerable families or local government finances.

The tech supporters — like Siya Raj Purohit, on OpenAI’s edu team — rightly point out that “OpenAI did not invent cheating. People who want to cheat will find a way.” Here’s a fascinating exchange between a top education official and Purohit. “What in the value of an essay?”

Today, @mattbarnum.bsky.social and I detailed how educators are still struggling with the fallout of AI in their classroom with students surrounded by a thicket of conflicting advice about AI’s use as well as companies explicitly trying to get them to cheat via social media ads.

In testimony Monday, Microsoft CEO Nadella suggested he was overly enthusiastic about ChatGPT’s potential earlier. “Yeah, I mean, look, that’s called exuberance of someone who has like 3% share, that maybe I’ll have 3.5% share,” Nadella said. www.wsj.com/tech/ai/micr...

I just came across this essay courtesy Anne Helen Peterson and it really is so sad, so haunting and so gorgeous. So much time and potential collectively lost by dieting culture. www.nytimes.com/2020/02/26/style/bo…
