This is my grandmother. She was such a special lady, she had a rough life. Married at 16, she had 10 children by the time she was 36. Was dirt poor and fled wars and famines and horrors unnumbered and she was also the sweetest, most humble lady who ended her days surrounded by love. I miss her daily

My beloved grandma, her name was Maria Valeria but we called her Mamma Yeya. She is sitting on a big couch mending a dress and little 9 year old me is kneeling next to her giving her a kiss on the cheek. May she forever be ascended and her name elevated.

All Salvadoran families have a photo just like this one somewhere in the archives. I live. 🇸🇻

My grandmother, she wore custom made dresses that were conservative but brightly coloured. She also wore a white veil because she was a god fearing woman. My uncle is standing next to her, rocking a cowboy hat and a blue shirt. There’s a chequered floor and on the cyan blue walls photos of stern looking uncles and cousins and other family members. Oh and don’t forget everyone’s highschool diplomas on the wall.

There was a wonderful glamour of Salvadoran women of the 80s. Big hair, big heels, big shoulders. This is my lady mother, she is wonderful. She would go to the salon twice a week to get her hair did because “a respectable lady should not have to brush her own hair.”

Living in Melbourne is like living in the Book of the Apocalypse. ON THE SAME DAY, torrential rain which caused floods and then to top it off, an earthquake. My old girl’s weather is fucked and furious but I love her and will defend her and all of the fucking weirdos that live betwixt her.

Dinner in Melbourne is one of life’s great joys. The weather is shit but the people are wonderful, here are some of those wonderful people having a cosy dinner inside while it rains outside.
