Happy National Poetry Day. My old pal, one-time Totnesian drinking buddy, and book-recommender extraordinaire Alice O'Malley recently published Ecotone, her debut poetry book, and it is absolutely exquisite. Available from Black Cat Poetry Press: www.blackcatpress.co.uk/product-page...

To the surprise of no one, the Embankment Road footbridge is still not open. The council have given up the pretence of claiming an end date, but have put up CCTV, alongside a new sign exclaiming the benefits of the path that's now been closed for over 100 days with no end in sight.

Finally a rainy Autumnal evening walk. I thought I'd never see the day.

My first ever proper visit to Tinside (it was closed for my entire childhood, I'm a "learnt to swim at Ballards" Janner) and I got to take Cooper in with me. They have a dog day every year for the final session before closing for winter. Bloody brilliant idea.

It might be finished by the end of the month, but I doubt it based on this. The current signage says work will begin on the 30th 🤦

Funnily enough when I was an adolescent boy I wrote and acted in a short play based on the Lizzie Borden story for my GCSE drama final performance. I got a decent grade but I'm sure the Guardian would've hated it.

Miron Muslić doing what Miron Muslić does. I hate the way he left us but he is a very special coach.

Popped into the Book Cupboard and picked up a small pile of books for an even smaller amount of money. Most of the shop is still closed but will, I'm told, be opening up in the next couple of months. There are bargains to be had.

Went to my uncle's funeral today and came home with a box containing my long-dead dad's collection of shiny rocks, two whittled elephants, and his glasses. If anyone needs me I'll be wallowing in a Proustian nightmare for a while. Lovely service though. I wish I'd known him better.

The story of the Manhattan Project, if the bomb was actually a boy. One of the most audacious and strange novels I've come across in a long time. I've no idea where I heard of it or when I bought it, but I picked it off the shelf three days ago and have torn through it. Unexplainable and brilliant.

I've just booked Cooper in for dog day at Tinside. Neither of us is a particularly natural swimmer but at least it'll get me out of the house on a Sunday afternoon.

Dear Plymouth City Council, If the need to resurface the only footbridge across Embankment Road for miles is so urgent then how about actually doing the fucking work? It's been 50 days without a safe crossing to Blagdon's Meadow for pedestrians and I'm fucking tired of it. Grumble grumble fuck you

Torpoint ferry queue currently starts outside of Torpoint due to A38 closure. If you're thinking of heading this way I wouldn't bother.

I've been all the way across Europe in the past 6 weeks, from the Black Sea to the Adriatic and the south of France and unironically, Plymouth Hoe on a sunny day is up there with the most beautiful of all of them. Maybe the most underrated spot anywhere.

First decent walk since I've been home. Nine miles around Plymbridge Woods, exploring paths we've never taken before and scrambling to find shortcuts when we stumbled onto private land. Trying to ignore the creepy clown toy that's appeared outside my back gate. I'm almost certain it's not haunted.

Day 16: Crossing to Croatia Seven hours of (mostly) comfortable, air-conditioned travel, past Balaton Lake and through increasingly left-behind looking Hungarian border towns, over this bridge, and I'm in country number three. Croatia. Excited to see what a weekend in Zagreb has to offer.

So long to the swifts of Burgas, who have kept me company through the past few virus-ridden days. Just the small matter of a six hour train to Sofia and a flight to Budapest today...

Day 5: Day of Slavonic Alphabet, Bulgarian Enlightenment and Culture Bulgarians are rightly fiercely proud that their nation is the birthplace of the Cyrillic alphabet (repeat after me: IT'S NOT RUSSIAN) and today marks a major national holiday to celebrate that fact.

Day 4: Madjare to Plovdiv There have been humans living in Plovdiv, they say, for 8000 years. Many have left their mark. Brutalist behemoths sit alongside ancient Roman amphitheatres, newlyweds hang out of car windows, horns blaring, as tourists scatter to avoid the sudden torrential downpours.

Moments later a woman handed me a stick of candyfloss from nowhere and we all laughed as I tried, and failed, to eat it with some degree of dignity. What a strange and delicious day.
