Yeah that’s kinda my point. A class 3, while more powerful than you need on trails/paths, is really helpful when riding with traffic. As long as you are respectful with speed when sharing space with other bikes and pedestrians it’s fine.

My only advice is check the local used market. I have found e-bikes are something wealthy people sometimes buy and rarely use. Within a year or two these bikes can be found for a significant discount. My current bike was $3800 new and cost me $1000 with only 15 miles on the odometer.

I have owned class 1,2, and 3 cargo bikes. Currently ride a class 1. While class 3 is generally overkill, depending on your situation there are times when the 25 mph capability on a class 3 is helpful (If you need to ride with traffic often). For trails and sidewalks 25 is way too fast.

My 15 year old wanted to hang with some friends yesterday. The first friend lives like 7 miles away. He needed to get from there to another friend 8 miles away. After that he needed to get home which was 5 miles from friend #2. His ebike made it all doable without someone needing to drive him.

This is similar to responses I get when I suggest eating less meat. You picture your plate as it currently is and just remove the meat. When the suggestion of biking is made, you think of your current life and remove the car. Obviously “bikes” includes the large infra. shifts that make it possible.

Well, I got caught in a downpour on my bike last night. Didn’t have my rain pants (because I’m a dummy) and I got DRENCHED. I walked into the library soaked from the waist down. Here’s the thing. It was fine… fun even. We avoid mild discomfort to the point where we forget it can be invigorating!

Recently did a tour of CU in Boulder with my daughter. They basically said, don’t bring a car, there is no place to park. You can get anywhere you need with a bike and or the bus. It was awesome.

My only thought is, whatever you are looking to buy, spend some time on the used marketplaces first. I’ve found, with a little patience, I can almost always find what I’m looking for. Kids stuff especially. Kids grow out of things so fast so there are mountains of really nice kids items available

This is the wrong lesson and the wrong take. The popularity should be a massive signal to municipalities that people are desperate for car alternatives. They should be carving out safe spaces for these bikes (away from cars) to make it easier and safer for people to leave the car at home.
