The children know this. They know that at least for a few hours, even with the trauma they’re enduring nonstop everyday, even with the hum of drones in the air nonstop everyday, even with nearby explosions, fires, thirst, starvation, dehumanization, and overwhelming suffering everyday -- they know that for a little while at school with their teachers and friends -- that they can be momentarily free. The Israeli military forces may target the school and the makeshift classroom they’re sitting in, but as much as is possible, their minds are not still captured in the fear and horrors. As the teachers present the lessons, the educational activities get under way, they are surrounded by their friends. It is an emotionally safe space. The children are able to momentarily forget where they are and the imminent danger they’re in. The school could be targeted at any moment. Explosion or fire from a nearby missile or incoming shrapnel could take them all out at any second and everyone knows it. The reality never leaves, but for a few minutes or for an hour or two out of the day the children are happy. Their minds and hearts find solace at school.
