GTA is on the incredibly short list of non-sports games that normies care about, which by default makes it a cultural phenomenon.

Not to mention the idea that all games will feed into one another doesn't predict the fun guild experiences he describes. What would actually happen is digital sweatshop guilds in the global south grinding mobs 24/7 for their boss to have market dominance on blorp cubes.

The only part of that imagined future that is actually cool is the idea of people doing completely different things all contributing to the same group. But you don't actually need crypto (nor want it) to accomplish that. Tech-wise it's been possible, and only held back for boring reasons (money).

People always say this but greed is the wrong framing here. This is just the rules and incentives of our current economic system playing out. It doesn't matter who is in the chair; it wouldn't be much better with better people in charge because it's not a greed problem, it's a systemic problem.

It would be really funny to make a clip that perfectly loops into itself and just repeat it.

High fidelity graphics, parries, yellow paint, questionable story changes, and a worse soundtrack. Sounds awesome!

I only suggested it because it's an old remake but the "remake everything" crowd would probably unironically think it needs one. Just funny to think about.

Sorry, super late to this post but I strongly relate to this. It was shocking to me how badly people want *all* of their vaguely related opinions to be directly mentioned in the video regardless of how it would affect the overall flow / pacing / structure.

Who's confidently declaring anything here? My whole point is we don't know enough but people read a headline, made assumptions, and got upset. Do you work at Bulkhead? The only people whose experience matters here is them. Maybe, just maybe, "what *you* reckon" isn't good enough either.

Panic @decisivepanic.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
I feel like that kind of cynicism will usually predict correctly but when I read this I feel like this is more of a "We occasionally expect people to step up" and less "You will work until you pass out and be thankful for the opportunity." Maybe I'm wrong but I think people are primed for outrage.

I don't think people are in as much agreement on the definition as you may think, and I think that mismatch is the heart of the disagreement among reasonable people. People say crunch is NEVER necessary, and ALWAYS a management failure.
100
Panic @decisivepanic.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
That's the whole point. Crunch occasionally happens a little and that's okay so long as it's avoided as much as possible and compensated fairly. Do those things regularly happen? No. That's a problem. Do they happen at Bulkhead? No earthly idea, but that lead claims it does, and if true that's fine.

Panic @decisivepanic.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
Well in that scenario it certainly helps for a couple weeks. Nobody is saying this stuff needs to go on for long periods of time.

Panic @decisivepanic.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
It's not really you. It's just the replys in aggregate. I think it's obvious to most people that it's less efficient, but deadlines can demand it because time estimates can be wrong and the project can get behind schedule. Delay the game would be the obvious move, but what if your publisher says no?

The responses I've gotten here have really illustrated to me why social media is such a terrible form of communication and ill-suited to any kind of discussion or debate. It's just too complicated a subject to encapsulate in a post with a character limit. Meanwhile, hardline stances need 1 sentence.
100
Panic @decisivepanic.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
Compensation is absolutely required for crunch to be anywhere close to okay. I'm with you there. As an industry it's obviously a big problem but in this specific case it's unclear. The details are sparse but in the article they talk about how (some?) employees at Bulkhead *are* compensated for it.

Panic @decisivepanic.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
This app is 99% "here's what I reckon" by volume. Obviously whatever developers themselves want matters most. They should unionize and get the conditions they're happy to work under. All I'm saying is that hard jobs are not inherently bad. Not all jobs should be hard, either. Stuff is complicated.

Panic @decisivepanic.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
Either you're in a bad mood or I'm too autistic to understand why what I said was upsetting but either way I'm sorry.
100
Panic @decisivepanic.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
Where it gets nefarious is when they pretend like it'll be 100% optional but you're pressured into doing it anyway for an indeterminate amount of time with minimal additional compensation.

Panic @decisivepanic.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
Crunch would really just be called mandatory overtime anywhere else. Is occasional mandatory overtime immoral? Maybe you believe that, but if expectations are set before you're even hired and there's some reasonable limits on how long or how hard crunch can happen, I can totally see it being fine.

Panic @decisivepanic.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
You're right that small business are extremely variable in how they treat their employees, but they also aren't unconditionally evil for laying people off or being upfront that sometimes overtime will be necessary. Context matters.

Panic @decisivepanic.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
Firing people really sucks when you're AAA with unreasonable amounts of money but when you have a smaller studio whose last game was a terrible flop it's far from a moral failing. If they continue to regularly fire people after the massive success of Wardogs then I will be the first one to decry it.

This is what he said. Completely different vibe.

Panic @decisivepanic.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
The article itself is good but I really feel like this headline is misrepresenting what he said by omission (I suspect intentionally since it makes for a very juicy headline). Recognizing crunch as being necessary if undesirable, and compensating the team accordingly seems completely reasonable.

Obsolete or outdated would probably not be the right terms, but I do generally think games have improved significantly on various axes. They've regressed on some others, too. Older games are certainly no worse than newer ones; most games suck no matter what era you're talking about lol

Panic @decisivepanic.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
DMC3 holds up very well. One of the best games of that era or any era for that matter.

I think you're correctly identifying that a lot of these AI people are crazy but very smart people have had some version of this alignment concern for a long time and have been and are working as we speak to try to solve it before some rich dingus accidentally makes a digital terrorist.
120
Panic @decisivepanic.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
Part of the reason people are worried about AGI is because they would likely be able to self-improve their code. If that happens it's a positive feedback loop and it wouldn't take long to crash way past human level intelligence even if you start well behind it.

Panic @decisivepanic.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
Misalignment is the norm, it is the default state of any artificial agent in a sufficiently complex environment. Alignment is difficult because it's like trying to draft airtight laws with no loopholes or unethical outcomes. In real life companies can and do find the cracks. AI is the same way.

Panic @decisivepanic.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
The only way #1 isn't guaranteed is either if you think humans are smart because of some spiritual reason or because you think humanity will cease to exist before then. On principle nothing chemicals and time can do is out of reach of technology given enough development.
110
Panic @decisivepanic.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
The first two are pretty much guaranteed as it stands. The third is just likely given how reckless and profit-motivated all the companies working on it are being. Just as an example, Chess AI went from not existing, to being pretty bad, to being way better than any human player very quickly.
200
Panic @decisivepanic.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
Some people are certainly just irrationally worried, but the core problem in AI safety is just figuring out how to rigidly specify exactly what we do and don't want it to do. The only assumption is that AGI will have goals, and so we need to make sure the goals we give it are actually what we want.

And visually that was a better remake, a port of that was also an option. Instead we get an overly detailed mess like what happened with Oblivion. (Not quite that bad but very similar feeling)

Knowledge doesn't trivialize an action game, practice does, and at a rate much slower than you gain the knowledge. Stealth games are often trivialized by knowledge alone, and that knowledge is gained almost immediately through loading saves.
000
Panic @decisivepanic.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
I would argue an action game holds up better in a save-scummy environment simply because the execution requirement means you can "know" what you're supposed to do but still fail. That's much rarer in a stealth game because they typically don't have high execution requirements.

Panic @decisivepanic.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
Don't forget diegetizing failure itself. Part of the major innovation in Shadow of Mordor/War is just that dying has lasting, *interesting* consequences in a game that *isn't* run based. We don't necessarily have to let the player try the same challenge twice if we can always give them new ones.

In this video in-particular, I'm more or less constructing the argument in real time, as opposed to giving the argument and then later elaborating on why. I think both can work but the former feels more natural for me, at the very least it felt the most natural this time around.
100
Panic @decisivepanic.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
Eh, I know that's what you're "supposed" to do, but honestly I struggle to write anything I'm happy with in such a formulaic way. Plus, I worry for some that hearing the conclusion before the "evidence" will make them shut down if it's not in total alignment with their opinion already. Maybe foolish

Panic @decisivepanic.bsky.social · 05/09/2026
Thanks, I try. I do actually mention checkpoints in passing, but yeah it's not a point I belabor. Fundamentally it doesn't matter where the save is (and that's my point). Riding the line between brevity and the necessary redundancy for actual comprehension is something I'm still feeling out.
