Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Has anyone found non-American tech platforms that they've actually migrated to? The $$$/data bleed and vulnerability is real. 000
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Like, if we could chip away at the productivity issues in housing, we could not only create a whole lot of housing, but also pivot our economy from being so focused on creating a non-productive asset. 010
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 04/10/2026I'll say it again, his weakness is shortage-induced inflation in (R) districts. Shortages happen because of restricted inputs OR increasing local demand. There's more than one type of inflation, so you want the 'bad' kind. 010
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Well, debt money that will need to be inflated away, afaict. "Your own tax dollars" is a difficult thing to totally figure out in the American system of taxation. 010
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 04/10/2026I find that Section 59, sedition, will apply more right now. We're lucky to be free enough to be able to discuss secession and it DOES suck that it's apparently legal to seek outside aid. But there's a strict line where it becomes an indictable offense. 000
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 02/10/2026It's harder than you think. A lot of communities would actually prefer a lower local footprint. A lot of the problem is that external capital doesn't care, but that's the same problem as 'local people aren't investing' This is why the ESG mutual funds existed, btw. Might as well invest there? 000
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 02/10/2026He does not care about your pain. Neither does his base. His only political weakness is shortage-induced inflation in (R) districtions. That's hard to arrange, especially among the slacktivist crowd. 010
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 02/10/2026The problem with a stronger currency is if it comes from a natural resource with low margins and lots of foreign investment. then you're trading oil for Netflix and thinking you're getting stronger every fiscal quarter. I really need people learning more about Canada's productivity crisis 110
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 02/10/2026Currency is currency. Cases can be made that a stronger currency has a benefit and vis versa. It depends what we buy with a stronger currency. If we buy more capital investment in order to boost productivity, then it's good. But that requires reading definitions in an econ dictionary. 110
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 29/09/2026I don't think the system cares to stop him. His only political weakness is shortage-induced inflation in (R) districts, and that's *hard* to arrange without deliberate effort/coordination. 010
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 28/09/2026He doesn't care about unrest in Blue or Purple states. His only real weakness is shortage-induced inflation in (R) districts and that's *hard* to arrange without actual effort. 000
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Could we get you a small list of enemies that you'll call for help at the hospital? If friends won't do? 130
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 25/09/2026I think that Trump is extreme enough that calling Carney's changes 'Trumpification' is seriously underselling the damage that Trump is doing, tbh. You might be a bit too self-absorbed in your own model to talk to. 310
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 24/09/2026I could make the argument that by delaying/resisting the Trumpification of Canada, he's buying time. It will be technological innovation that eventually reduces fossil carbon demand (cuz elsewise ... Jevon's Paradox) As demand falls, we need to make sure 'just pump more oil!' isn't the answer 100
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 24/09/2026But it's still true that we need to wean from coal/oil. Natural gas ... we can wean a bit more slowly. That can only be done with aggressive investment of the social profits of burning those fossil fuels. Let's hope the nuclear/electrification efforts elsewhere over-ride Alberta's effort to emit CO2 000
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 24/09/2026What's more needed is the R&D push to get us off of fossil fuels. Like, I get why Albertans think it's 'impossible for oil demand to go down' and are betting on that guess. And I get why Carney needs to unite the country with compromises to resist Trump. 100
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 24/09/2026As long as Canadians learn how "Foreign Direct Investment" can include "Branch Plant Investment" on the books, but have a strict eye out on the difference between the two. Which, I guess, requires reading more articles. Canada needs FDI, but also a citizenry more devoted to building capital. 101
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 23/09/2026Trump's main political weakness is shortage-induced inflation in (R) districts. He doesn't care about your pain or vitriol 000
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 20/09/2026This thing where we convinced ourselves that large cup of coffee is worth $2 is bonkers. I mean, it's not as bad as a society that has to borrow to buy a car (instead of buying cars from savings), but it's still *nuts*. 010
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 20/09/2026If you come across any good english sources (on youtube) discussing this at a reasonably high level, from the Danish perspective ... can you link it here? I'd love to know what's going through y'all's heads. Strikes me that Trump needed a win, so I hope you come out ahead vs. resisting him. 000
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 20/09/2026His main political weakness is shortage-induced inflation in (R) districts. As long as the refrigerated eggs show up on schedule, they'll keep backing his plan. 143
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 18/09/2026What we've learned is that a mutually beneficial relationship *is* possible, but not from a position of weakness. Their next crazy president has a 50% chance of being a nutbar greenie (undoing all the pipeline efforts that go south) and 50% chance of being more rapacious than Trump. 010
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 17/09/2026I enjoyed it for quite a bit. Then I noticed something that kinda made me enjoy it less. BUT, I'll tell you after you're kinda done bingeing, since I enjoyed it until then. (It's nothing bad, just an observation) 000
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 17/09/2026Yeah, that whole 'positive leverage' spiel was ... weird. It's been very sad to see that Albertan conservatives are such a special brand of conservatives that they'd not be willing to help defend Ontario conservatives. 100
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 17/09/2026I think much of the same stuff would have happened, tbh, except that liberals would be super upset and the Conservatives would be saying "oh, it's necessary". 000
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 17/09/2026My advice is to listen to this (and support Canadian content by doing the algorithm thing) and then get a wonky friend to listen to it and recommend resources to learn from next. www.youtube.com/live/0T6r65R...youtube.comSpeech by Senior Deputy Governor Rogers / Discours de la première sous-gouverneure RogersYouTube video by Bank of Canada - Banque du Canada 011
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 17/09/2026Many economists say that Canada's issue is a lack of 'productivity' (which doesn't mean what many people seem to think it means) It's so bad that one quote is "the advantage of being so bad is that there are lots of opportunities to fix things" Strikes me that we should be learning what they mean 110
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 16/09/2026So even if you squint sidesways, it really does look like Alberta subsidizes Quebec. And some of that 'subsidy' is because of stuff Quebecers themselves are doing (to themselves) All this ignores that you need fiscal transfer to prevent Dutch Disease. Buying from Quebec (and further) actually helps 000
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 16/09/2026The resentment towards Quebec interlinks with the resentment towards Equalization. It's rough. The big issue is that Quebec *itself* is seen as resentful AND delivering under-capacity due to poor governance. Some of this is legit, their Separatism hurt their incomes. That makes the double wammy. 110
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 16/09/2026My parents are now entirely getting their information from either what they see on Meta (including the Meta LLM) and the Google AI. Training them to defend themselves from not using social media to get their news is *rough*. 000
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 15/09/2026But it IS a legitimate concern. Trump's goal was economic annexation. The warning is that deep thought (not kneejerk) is required to analyze, because the risks are strong either way. 010
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 15/09/2026There will be a difference between branch plant foreign investment and foreign investment. That might require reading a couple articles, since a person online isn't a good source of information. But there's a reason we 'need' to: what we (you and I) were doing previously wasn't working. 010
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 15/09/2026Considering household debt is also rising unsustainably, the status quo behaviour is NOT going to grow us into our needs. We have a 2nd issue. "Investment" in economics is NOT what "investment" is in finance/Wall Street. It was a bait-and-switch of definitions. 020
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 15/09/2026You're not wrong. Government needs are growing faster than GDP. Taxes aside, that's something that needs to be addressed with investment/growth. My MAJOR concern is that Canadians have not read up the difference between Branch Plant Investment as a variant of Foreign Investment. 120
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 15/09/2026We hired him to build resilience vs. Trump. Remember, the more liberal "Trudeau/NDP alliance" did NOT create sufficient resilience. 131
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 15/09/2026I'm a lil jealous. In 2009 I had to buy a used Corolla and I promised myself that my next car would be electric. I just keep hoping I'll get to the $$$ situation where I can afford one. 100
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 15/09/2026Oooooh, I hope it works out. The 'upside' of getting it in winter is that you're starting with the hardest part first: most learning curve, but everything is easier after that. 100
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 13/09/2026In Alberta, is there a downside to putting on a Canadian car-flag? Is the benefit not worth the effort? Have I wasted my time and money? 210
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 13/09/2026It's not just that. We need to be shifting consumption habits that *also* cause us to be overall more resilient. Giving up Californian carrots for Canadian gummy bears *might not* actually be the most efficient pivot. Buying things that create additional utility vs. leisure. e.g., buy science 001
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 13/09/2026What you need is one ally who looks at their articles and the screenshots them in order to help people stay abreast of what's being published. It's crazy important to have a diversity of news sources, and the diversity *partially* be based on ownership structure. 000
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 13/09/2026I'm glad you slept really well, regardless. PLUS, if you'd slept really with w/ the ambien, you might be crediting it for you success. 000
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 13/09/2026At a Christian funeral, he bragged that he doesn't forgive his enemies. He's completely corrupted all decency. Unfortunately, his only political weakness is shortage-induced inflation in red districts. That's *hard* to cause on purpose. 000
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 12/09/2026Now that the foreign investment summit is on-going, ask a wonky friend the difference between Branch Plant Foreign Investment vs. the healthier versions. Because an informed citizenry can defend itself. 000
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 12/09/2026I'm a Philistine, so I don't know styles and their names. I don't listen to much music, but I'm supporting her in the algorithm when I'm showering, quite often. 010
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 11/09/2026Recommend and put a Quebec band onto your playlist to support Quebec while Trump attacks them. (use their official channel, support them in the algorithm) Angine de Poitrine (microtonal wackiness) Charlotte Cardin (delightful pop) 110
Shy Qu @decakay.bsky.social · 11/09/2026I think the only logical response is to build resilience against their increasing craziness. Invective won't swap GOP voters. Democrats can only do so much to help protect us without risking something of their own well-being. There are a handful of things that, if adopted, help us build. 000
