I’ve been meaning to pick this one up for awhile, and it arrived today. I’ve lost track of how many different VHS tapes and DVDs I’ve bought of these films, but I suspect they probably won’t see another release. I wish they would have done a set for the 1960s, 1975 and 1980 TV cartoons as well.

Scott Shaw filed a lawsuit against Filmation, alleging similarities between Quacula and Duckula.The legal dispute was settled out of court, resulting in the removal of all 16 episodes. Yet somehow they’ve managed to run in syndication and show up on budget VHS tapes with Heckle and Jeckle.

There really isn’t a right or wrong way to draw comics. While a lot of creators make picture perfect art that follows all the rules, others lean into the chaos of stream of consciousness art and writing, especially in indie publications. It’s about personal expression for a lot of creators.

With The Simpsons, the writers and producers care about the show and its legacy. Yes, they have been wildly inconsistent over the years, with obvious attempts to grab ratings with “event episodes”, but overall, they care about the characters. South Park is just mean-spirited “satire”.

South Park has been dead to me since the whole anti-trans “Mrs. Garrison” storyline. The only people Trey and Matt care about are themselves. They’re doing whatever storyline gets eyes on their aging show.

That is one of the moments in the Simpsons where the younger mindset of the writers shows. With hindsight, I’m sure many of these gags look questionable as one gets older. They’re funny, but you think “Maybe I wouldn’t write that now”.
