Reports of people being arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement have led children to not show up to school, left businesses on the verge of closing and people afraid to leave their homes, said Woodburn Mayor Frank Lonergan.
ICE raids were among the many topics U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., discussed during a Jan. 20 town hall at Chemeketa Community College. One speaker suggested shuttering ICE.
But Wyden doesn't want that because people depend on the agency for access to immigration information.
"I want it understood that I want something very different than the status quo," Wyden said. "I'm a ringleader in saying that there have to be guardrails, that we have to cut off any increase whatsoever. We have to restrict their spying on people."
Other topics brought up included the release of the Epstein files, the Trump administration's desire for Greenland, and the impacts of powerhungry data centers on local infrastructure.

Oregon's senior senator said he stands firm against the White House's focus on immigration raids that have caused harm to U.S. citizens, including reportedly posing as utility workers, intimidation and using unmarked vehicles.
"This is exactly what (President Donald) Trump said he wasn't going to
do," said Wyden, the ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee. "He said that he was going to deal with drug cartels, violent criminal, murders and the like.
"And if we don't get a good package that makes it clear that ICE shouldn't be doing these things with snatching kids and minorities and people who came to this country 40 years ago and have nothing wrong, then we're just going to stay at it until we do get it fixed."
The U.S. Senate has until Jan. 30 to vote on a federal funding package to avert another government shutdown.
The $1.2 trillion package, released on Jan. 20, includes measures that would add accountability of ICE in the wake of an ICE agent shooting and killing of Renee Good on Jan. 7.
The House of Representatives is expected to vote on the bill later this week.
One of the things in the new package are restrictions that include training for ICE officers and oversight of detention facilities.
