Happy IDL #lightday2026, May 16th. @idlofficial.bsky.social #lightday2025 @ausphysics.bsky.social @david-optica.bsky.social @optica.org It's the time of rainbows on the eastern seaboard of Australia. Great to see weather forecast on ABC News 14 May tell people when and how to see their rainbow.

@aip.org.au @minaskar.bsky.social Agreed - completely on point. It applies to undergraduate education in physics as well. It's the brain that is being wired/developing rich connections - or not.

Explanation. It’s a dryer drum – stainless steel. It is reported that when stainless steel is heated more chromium diffuses towards the surface and more oxygen diffuses in from the air. The thin film of chromium oxide, which passivates the surface, increases in thickness.

One by BYU for SiO2 bottom right cleanroom.byu.edu/color_chart . The latter also shows the effect of the intensity of the illuminating source. The source for the dryer drum photos was natural skylight. #lightday2025 @idlofficial.bsky.social @ausphysics.bsky.social @optica.org

The original cropped image shows a colour sequence that is a fit to thin film interference simulations. One by Prof Zawischa (www.itp.uni-hannover.de/fileadmin/it... ) – as a function of optical pathlength difference in nm – is shown bottom left.

The colour sequence of the thin film interference fringes maps the temperature profile of the drum when the dryer is in operation – thicker Cr2O3 film away from the supporting spars – the middle of the perforated sections of the cylinder.

Chromium oxide has a refractive index of ~2.1-2.3 in the visible (cf diamond ~2.4 @588 nm).

Please reply with your explanations. For those keen to learn more of such beautiful optical phenomena watch the replies. I’ll chip in in a couple of days to acknowledge those who worked it out and add to the explanation if needed.
