September 25, or “9 to 5,” is Dolly Parton Day. Today, we celebrate Dolly’s extraordinary life and the legacy she left behind, which touched us all. She was an inspiration to many women facing serious challenges in the workforce, and whenever we spoke, her kindness stayed with me.

Tariffs can be a tool in the toolbox, but Trump's tariffs are doing nothing but raising costs and creating uncertainty for Americans.    From the auto industry, to tourism, and everything in between--this administration is leaving work people behind.

As Michiganders struggle to afford gas, groceries, or healthcare, they are also picking up the tab for Trump's tariffs.   Michigan's economy has taken a $23 BILLION hit because of these tariffs. That's an average of almost $6,000 per household. And it’s more than any other state.

The U.S. needs to start treating Canada like the close partner they are, and both countries need to come back to the negotiating table and work out a fair and comprehensive deal. A prolonged trade war will only hurt working men and women on both sides of the border.

Canada and the U.S. are intertwined not just in our values, but also in our economies. Canada is a critical market for American manufacturers, farmers, energy producers, and more. And Americans depend upon Canadian products, energy, and natural resources.

Canada and the U.S. share the longest international border in the world; we are bound together by generations of friendship, family, democratic values, and yes, even Great Lakes. The values that unite us are stronger than any policy disagreement that divides us.

Canada is our friend and ally. We share bridges, lakes, and livelihoods. Tariffs can be a tool, but that requires intelligence to strategically use them. The only thing Trump’s trade war will do is hurt workers on both sides of the border.
