Tax cuts in various sectors will also leave the Treasury with less money to spend on people who need it most (typically the poorest in society). Tory "solutions" always leads to hurting the poorest most to protect and grow wealth, a strategy that is unsustainable long term.

Pubs are struggling because people can no longer afford to go out as much as they used to due to trickle up economics. The problem with trickle up economics is that it continues taking more and more money from much of society, so tax cuts for hospitality would only offer a temporary reprieve...

One of Nick Ferrari's safe subjects that he regularly goes back to is the issue of pubs struggling and closing. His solution? Tax cuts for the hospitality sector. The problem is that this is a sticking plaster being offered to deliberately hide a deeper problem...

Tax avoiders were getting more tax breaks and moving money into offshore accounts rather than contributing back to the society that helped them get rich. 10 years of undiluted hate shifted the Overton window to ensure that migrants are always the first to be blamed for almost anything.

Here we are, over 10 years after the Brexit Referendum with politicians across the spectrum having either blamed EU migrants and asylum seekers, or not stood up to support them. Not one brave enough to remind us that it was actually wealthy bankers who helped crash the economy...

6. Sunak's short lived moment offered nothing new. More "STOP THE BOATS!" on podiums and little else. 7. When Starmer became PM, Farage was effectively leading the increasingly far-right media, so Keir simply continued where the Tories ended, with a feeble and unconvincing "stop the boats"...

5. Boris Johnson? Well he didn't really do much except go into hiding; running into fridges, avoiding COBRA meetings and ducking questions about pandemic parties. He did manage to stand behind a "STOP THE BOATS!" podium, surrounded by Union Jacks. He did love the Brexity 3 word slogans though...

3. Corbyn's dislike of the EU stems right back to when the Common Market was formed during the EEC era, a capitalist's wet dream. He blamed EU workers for low wages and eroded workers rights. 4. Theresa May already had a previous history of targeting migrants with messages plastered on vans...

A timeline of immigrant bashing. 1. Farage and his Brextremist pals saw an opportunity to scapegoat immigrants in order to protect billionaires. 2. Cameron couldn't admit that his own austerity policies were really to blame for the atate of the country rather than immigrants...

Despite such a short distance between these islands, Little Diomede (American) is 21 hours behind Big Diomede (Russian) because they are separated by the international date line. Because of this, Little Diomede is also known as Yesterday Island, and is 1 day behind it's big brother.

Interesting fact. The shortest distance between Russia and America is 2.4 miles, two islands known as Big Diomede (Russian) and Little Diomede (American), which are my new nicknames for Putin and Trump. However, mainland Russia and Alaska are just 53 miles apart...

Low pay ensures that many people cannot afford further education or retraining. People struggling to pay rents are far less likely to risk starting a business, even if they can scrape enough capital together. If AI steals jobs, society will have little choice but to switch to UBI.

IDS had already shown us who he is after venturing to one of the most deprived parts of Glasgow, recognising the failures of successive Tory Governments and promising to improve lives, then hekping to usher in a string of austerity measures which only made things worse for the Easterhouse community.

However, Reform politicians will not outline a "scale" or "spectrum" of Britishness as it would expose their whole ideology as an unworkable and impractical farce. Also, Reform donors like Muhammed Zia Yusuf would automatically be on the "wrong side" of such a scale.

Despite her own words, Braverman doesn't truly believe this herself, or she wouldn't try to distract by talking about Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland when challenged as to how to define Britishness or Englishness...

Braverman believes that she has to devalue her own national status and belonging to prove her loyalty to Reform and its supporters. She just refuses to say the quiet part out loud, that anyone who isn't white cannot truly be British in the eyes of Reform supporters...

Suella Braverman never had an issue serving under an American born Prime Minister who stood in front of a room full of Union Jacks talking about "British Values". Not once did she claim that he wasn't British enough because his great-grandfather was called Ali Kemal and came from Turkey...

Far-right loons are phoning into LBC insisting that blowing up a ULEZ camera with a bomb was not terrorism. Kevin Rees had experimented making homemade bombs in his attic, before using one on a camera in Sidcup as vehicles including a bus passed by. This was the damage done to a parked van.

Debating Room @debatingroom.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Most petrol cars first registered from January 2006 onward are ULEZ Compliant because they meet the required Euro 4 emissions standards. The suggestion often made by the right is that working class families would struggle to afford ULEZ compliant vehicles 🤔

Debating Room @debatingroom.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Technically they still have the right to pollute our streets, but ULEZ simply encourages them not to.

Iran has managed to give it's people universal healthcare. The care may be basic and somewhat patchy, but it demonstrates that even Iran cares more about it's citizens than America does.

Finally, I'd love to hear your opinions on how to improve our asylum system and defuse the hatred of Reform, as well as constructive criticism of my thoughts.

Debating Room @debatingroom.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Anyone granted asylum status should automatically be given the same opportunities as Brits regarding employment, social housing, etc. No prioritising Brits first. It would be wrong to tell successful asylum claimants that they must "integrate" whilst treating them as second class citizens...

We also need to accept that by offering safe routes, far more people are likely to make a claim for asylum here once we remove the barrier of crossing the Channel to do so. However, as their asylum claims would be processed before arriving, they'd be allowed to work as soon as they arrive here...

Debating Room @debatingroom.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Putting such safe routes in place would vastly reduce the number of people risking their lives crossing the English Channel on small boats. It would also suggest that those continuing to cross on small boats are much more likely to have something to hide from authorities...

I believe the biggest problem we have is that our asylum system requires refugees to reach our shores before being able to make a claim for asylum. Opening asylum processing centres in countries like France would ensure asylum claimants are vetted before arriving here...

Whilst it would be wrong to lock up all asylum seekers, treating them as potential criminals, there is a real risk that a very small number will have committed serious crimes in the past. It only gives the far-right more fuel if such people then go on to commit similar crimes here...

The best way of neutralising the hate of Reform is by having a very open and honest debate about immigration. This involves discussing both the pros and cons of immigration, and challenging our own previously held views...

A wealth tax is long overdue in order to fund better social care and reduce poverty. Burnham has instead decided to take money off pensioners now only to give it back when they need it most. There is no transfer of wealth from those who can afford it most.

Debating Room @debatingroom.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Exactly this. We went from having one of the worst state pensions in Europe up to 12th highest thanks to the triple lock. I've always had an issue with pensioners being treated better than the sick, disabled and unemployed who often saw cuts to benefits, but the answer isn't to reduce pensions...

It's an effective tactic because most of us remember having more prosperity and hope for the future before the 2008 global financial crash. And whilst billionaires pay Farage to scapegoat migrants, we are far less likely to focus on the real issue of growing wealth inequality.

The far-right push for in-your-face nationalism, such as Union Jacks hanging from lampposts and a rose tinted version of bygone Britain is all part of this. Of course, it would be hard to convince people that we are as great now thanks to decades of Thatcherist erosion...

There's a strong link between English exceptionalism and a fear of immigration. If you are constantly led to believe that your nation is the best in the world, it's easy to convince yourself that every asylum seeker across the world is desperate to get here to take a piece of it for themselves...

Whilst the Mail and Telegraph regularly publish stories of wealthy individuals leaving the UK, what they don't tell us is that wealth has always offered much greater mobility, with rich people coming and going long before any talks about wealth taxes.
