hi bsky I'm not dead. hope you've had a happy pride month ! #professorlayton, azran legacy spoilers

A variation on a popular "Breaking Bad" meme.

A sketchy, poorly-drawn Leon Bronev approaches Emmy Altava and says, "It is pride month, Emmeline. You know what that means." Emmy appears confused and asks, "Huh? What? Do you want us to like... threaten gay archaeologists? What?" Bronev does not elaborate and walks away.

The art book is kinda funny because the character designer said this btw. Claire's glasses might just be a reflection of her studious nature. Sorry, as a near blind extremely myopic person myself I may have thought too much about this LOL

Character Designer Nagano: Sycamore's hairstyle and glasses are his most distinctive features. I can't help it; I have a tendency to slap glasses on just about any scholar or archaeologist character. (laughs) Sycamore was a bit of a special case because I used the glasses as a way to express some of the inner workings of his personality. He is the kind of person who feels like there is something between the things he sees and the world as a whole, almost like a tangible distance.

yeah i'll post this i guess. emmy and aurora parallels are real to Me, at the least

"Central theme of Azran Legacy is to not let obsession with the past consume you, lest you fall victim to traps of tradition. Bronev represents this by awakening the Azran Legacy through the repetition of the cycle of violence (kidnapped by a cult, became leader of said cult, inflicted same pain onto others). He pursued their legacy recklessly, quite literally using and disposing of others.

In this way, Targent is a reflection of the Azran: both are mighty empires built on coercion and forced labor.

The last thing the Azran did was build another servant - Aurora. And like Emmy, she had an obligation to fulfill the legacy set out for her.

Yet, in the end, the incapability (or unwillingness) to betray that obligation only created the undoing of those who coerced them.

Or something."

I'll post the essay (/j) whatever. Azran Legacy spoilers, warning for possibly uncomfortable discussion of complex relationships? my whole intention is Nuance

"I think a part of Emmy's playfulness / extroversion is a mask to try and better blend in with what she assumes "normal girls" are like. She acts the part. Maybe she watched some movies and carefully observed how other girls in boarding school behaved. But I also genuinely just think she's extroverted anyway because it's the way she's been reinforced in social situations lol. Like, her upbringing involved a lot of trying to get Bronev to actually act like a person. She's seen more vulnerable sides to him. And that means tearing down those walls a bit on her part

But. he is also the only person who can really knock Emmy's confidence down a bit, too. She respects him, unfortunately."

"This is part of what I mean by knocking down her confidence. Though I don't think Emmy is fully aware of it herself. This is the closest thing she had to a father, after all, so like, it's normal to sort of be a bit scared of him, right? And like, she knows he has bright sides. Sometimes. So to her, it's all just... respect.

Leon Bronev is technically the leader of a criminal paramilitary organization. Like I feel like Layton fans gloss over this. I also never shut the fuck up reminding people about it.

I usually avoid outright stating Leon was abusive, but even with the most charitable possible interpretation of him, he still like. Literally groomed Emmy.

Not to get Too Real but people from toxic home environments frequently speak out about how their parents (or whoever hurt them) still had good moments

Speaking of Bronev's humanity, you cannot "other" someone like that without the risk of believing that you (or anyone you judge as "good") is above sinking to that level. There has to be some self awareness that "bad people" are capable of good things, they aren't always bad, and vice versa.

Anyway. Leon Bronev."
