HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER (1986) [rewatch] "It's always the same, and it's always different." just an incredible study of a very complicated man, both cold & human, honest & dishonest, ruthless & personable, with no separation between. great direction, grimy & uncompromising high 9/10

DUNE (1984) "I'm dead to everyone unless I try to become what I may be." a tragic collapse of artistic vision. the first half is vibrant, engaging & meaningful with amazing sets & strong direction; the second loudly conveys lynch's dispirited frustration at being made to butcher it all. high 7/10

IP MAN (2008)[rewatch] "I realized today that I'm useless." incredible action. makes wing chun look like the coolest thing in existence. donnie yen brings some great nuanced acting. insanely romanticized & nationalist but kinda justified. col. sato is the most japanese looking man in history 9/10

BACKROOMS (2026) "It's okay... It's just the way we're wired." honestly fucking awesome. really enjoyed it start to finish. clark's acting was v passionate & compelling & the set work was incredible. rare interpretation of the meme i can get behind. i hope i never go back to these rooms!! 9/10

YAKUZA GRAVEYARD (1976) 「人間は腐るけど、海は腐らへん」 just plain awesome. RGG guys def saw this one. pre-80s bubble suits a yakuza story so well. grimy and messy and unglamorous, everyone is corrupt, they're all smoking and drinking and fighting all the time and nothing good comes of it. dudes rock high 9/10

REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA (2008) "Sometimes I wanted to cry / When the people on TV were not the way we were" gotta be the best entry in the Evanescence Cinematic Universe. appreciate the commitment to singing almost the entire movie. very fun sets and great practical gore high 7/10

SOLO (2018) "I don't like it, I don't agree with it, but I accept it." wildly inconsistent film. first half is total slop with the worst color grading known to man & indifferent shot comp. then it gets kinda fun, then mediocre again. largely hack writing. they really did call her L3-37 low 6/10

PASTORAL: TO DIE IN THE COUNTRY (1974) 「まあ大体、過ぎ去ったことは虚構だと思えばいいんだよ、全部」 literally just saw a picture & and decided to watch sight unseen, & i gotta tell you, it was really fucking good. very interesting themes about the nature of time & traumatic memory, crazy sets. i love Weird Cinema solid 9/10

MONONOKE-HIME (1997)[REWATCH] 「人間にもなれず、山犬にもなりきれぬ、哀れで醜い、かわいい我が娘だ。お前にサンを救えるか！？」 uh, yeah. movie's goated. what am i, stupid? likely my favorite miyazaki film because the moral dynamics are so complex, confronting the questions of why violence happens, when it's justified & what it costs high 10/10

PREDATOR (1987) "I ain't got time to bleed." i'll be honest i was playing mahjong while watching this but it caught progressively more of my attention. very fun solid flick, love the "monster with honor" premise. dirty, sweaty, bloody. what's better than this, just guys being dudes low 8/10

ALIENS (1986) [rewatch] "Vasquez, have you ever been mistaken for a man?" "No, have you?" it's iconic, it's classic, it didn't really land for me this time around. lots of cool parts, great xenomorph effects, but way less memorable sets/composition and newt is incredibly annoying i'm afraid 7/10

UMA MUSUME PRETTY DERBY: BEGINNING OF A NEW ERA (2024) 「狂気が生み出す残光」 was actually quite impressed with this. conveyed a lot of emotional depth and conflict. deranged science horse is incredible and surprisingly multifaceted. kind of a weak ending but i can't help being very warm on it low 9/10

STALKER (1979) «Господи, тюрьма! Да мне везде тюрьма. Пусти!» three russian guys do urbex in The Spooky Trash Zone. you won't believe what happens next cool and interesting with some noteworthy experimental choices. very slow, very philosophical, largely uneventful. extremely soviet high 7/10

ANGEL'S EGG (1985) [rewatch] 「卵は、割ってみなければその中に何が入っているのかわからないものだよ」 every time i see this movie it is more impressive and more meaningful. absolutely deranged levels of animation. love how much it dares to just let you sit with it. both minimalist & extremely dense with symbolism. goated rare 10/10

CLOUD (2024) 「ここは地獄の入り口か…」 kurosawa double feature. i was a little lukewarm on the first half just because it wasn't as experimental and gripping as Bright Future but oh my god once it kicks off it is absolute cinema. there are literally no good people in this movie. absolute banger solid 8/10

BRIGHT FUTURE (2003) 「ずっとここにいっていいよ」 my goat kurosawa kiyoshi does it again. great flick. what a way to start off the year. really captures the stagnant malaise of the 2000s, but still hits now when the only future i can imagine is darkness. shot composition goes off the fucking chain high 8/10
