Left the house to pick up some goodies from Gosh Comics - including rest of Oshimi’s “Blood on the Tracks”, the most recent issues of Metal Hurlant (English edition), and Urasawa/Nagasaki’s “Billy Bat”

Played Super Mario RPG (2023). I recall it got positive reviews but it really didn’t click with me. It just felt like an imitation of the original. Not inventive + doesn’t recapture magic. Thankfully it was mercifully short - most of it was played last weekend. Animated cutscenes were nice

Finished it! It was amazing. One of the best games I have played this year. Can’t believe I didn’t try it sooner (Switch release was 2018). On the bright side I was able to enjoy it 60fps in handheld mode on Switch 2. I wasn’t expecting the story to get so deep. Genuinely moved. #backlog

I think I know just over half of those questions. There were a few that flew over my head (or I just didn't know because I didn't start reading the comic until the mid 2000s)

Meanwhile, tinkered with my modded Switch Lite last night. I finally swapped the (left) joystick to a HALL sensor version as it was doing the weirdest drift which only occurred when you held it near the down position. Was too lazy to replace both sticks as it is a bit of a pain to access other side

Playing YS VIII: LACRIMOSA OF DANA as my game for September. Initially played it on my Switch Lite but the framerate was underwhelming. Moved it to my Switch 2 and plays like a dream. Presumably it is a flat 60fps or uncapped in handheld (boost) mode.

Figuring out/deciding if Patreon, Substack, Wordpress etc are worthwhile for a personal blog/site. I want to have the option of a partial paywall, maximise ease of use, have tabs, and be easy to find outside of word of mouth. Getting some income for my work is the priority. Trying each.

Editor, writer René Goscinny would have been 100 years old today. Giant of Franco-Belgian comics. Helped establish the concept of scénariste (comics writer) in French comics, levelled up Morris’ Lucky Luke, cocreated a heap of beloved characters, incl. Asterix the Gaul with Albert Uderzo.

It needn’t be said but taking a child under the age of 7 to a 10pm screening of a movie that runs past midnight is horrendous parenting. Spider-Man last night: within 30mins child asking the time, within an hour he started begging to go home to bed, and complained of headache. The movie can wait.

Uncertain on accessibility to newcomers. They can follow but hooked? 🤷🏻‍♂️ Old hands…while it has been some time since I watched either show, it’s fine. Wouldn’t mind more Aang movies - just hopefully we get a bit more development of the supporting cast too. Esp Aang + Katara 6/10 (7/10 for fans)

AVATAR AANG: THE LAST AIRBENDER was a decent start for Avatar Studios return to - and expansion of - that universe. The movie very much focuses on a more adult Aang, 10 years after the cartoon, as he wrestles with his past, his heritage, and sense of belonging. Animation and music is good. However…

This hurts. I am a bit of a news junkie and regularly listen to the programming on BBC Radio 4. Stourton’s distinctive voice has been a familiar presence in my adult life. It didn’t click that he had been ill. 68 is too young.

Might do a little side project of figuring out modal high and low temperatures (rounded to whole number) per month, every year, in my area for the last 20 years. I swear I saw a spreadsheet somewhere on the Met Office website. Mean average temperatures are misleading so this could be interesting.

Last night I completed the Switch Lite OLED mod. It got surprisingly messy but this time I didn’t tear the ribbon cable for the screen. I did have some issues that required reopening multiple times - game cart reader errors and a malfunctioning R button. Sorted both (not sure how on the first)

Sad times for British democracy. The fox said…”I’m out”. Count Binface v Nigel Farage are the only candidates in the Clacton by-election, triggered by Farage resigning as an MP for a constituency he barely represents at all in parliament.

Started my July game early: Crosscode. Liking it so far. It has been sitting in my backlog for a fair few years. I think I got it during Covid lockdown. Dungeons can feel a bit long and there are times when I unlock something and am waiting for the little tune you would get in Zelda.

This month I played Octopath Traveler 1 for the first time. While the stories were a bit shallow, they were still charming. Exploration was good. Nice to roam the world, find lots of little nuggets. The real star was the battle system. Really addictive turn based combat. I clocked in just <90 hours

Updated animation, no filler. I have modest hopes for this. I’ve consistently found the main ongoing anime unwatchable or dull, especially compared to the manga. youtu.be/zVXKN5pxbcI?...

I love those hilarious oddball Judge Dredd stories. Sure the series can be epic, or serious, or tragic, but it can very much be funny and satirical. This is from the two-parter “Monkey Business at the Charles Darwin Block”, from 2000AD 184-185 (November 1980)

Been giving The Boys a go past few weeks. Reached s2 ep7 and there is a scene done in such a way that it feels ripped right out of Eastenders.
