On stage at the suburban stadium, the cheapest entertainment of the week, presents a man who glows like radium, with thousand dollar slacks and slacking cheek. His eyeballs glitters at the ceiling fan, projected on a Babel tower screen, as God himself demands the humble man, collect a tenth of all my weekly green, because a deity that can create, a hundred billion galaxies next door, can also buy a pastor real estate, but only if I give a little more. The Artist vs. the Collapse

Artists will be targets. Some already are. Is it worth it?

There will be no decisive victory. No ego reward. It is unlikely that you will singlehandedly inspire every able person to resist and hold the state long enough to elect compassionate warriors to office.

Rather, you will influence your own mind and those around you. Art provides meaning, which is a prerequisite for actions like community building, mutual aid, organizing, and protest.

Your art is a node of influence. Combined with that of thousands of other artists, it forms a net that could slow the fall into fascism.

I would love for the net to hold, to stop the fall altogether. Even if it doesn’t, its remnants will provide the fabric to rebuild a stronger and more community-driven culture after the incompetent leaders inevitably meet their end.

That is what you have to offer. Not rescue, but rebirth.

The American state has a huge karmic debt to pay off. Founded on the slavery of Africans and the genocide of the indigenous, and sustained by environmental disregard, oppression, and nearly perpetual war, it can’t speak the truth of it own history without feeling guilt. And it refuses to feel guilt.
That refusal provides the currency through which the debt may soon be paid: those who have no issue with brutality against the unfamiliar — in other words, racists, misogynists, homophobes, transphobes, nationalists, and religious fundamentalists — have installed an incompetent leader who flatters them by telling them brutality is moral and necessary. By the time they realize their error, their lives will have collapsed alongside the lives of their targets.
If there is a silver lining, it is that while humans are fragile, the world is not. It will continue to turn, and the survivors will build something different. Possibly better. Maybe even sustainable.
