To understand the threat to our real democracy, watch Putin's fake one | Rafael Behr
As Russians vote this weekend, remember that Britain is not immune to the cynical tactics and corrosion of trust that keep him in power, says Guardian columnist Rafael Behr

“We’ve lost the war against global warming…” WTF, that 🤡 and his newspaper were not so long ago denying there was anything to fight against. As with their defence of Brexit, they keep moving the goalposts. 😡 😡

These far right clowns have gone from “there’s no such thing as climate change” to “it might be real but there’s nothing we can do about it anyway “ without ever pausing, even briefly, to consider why they were wrong in the first place.

Great analysis and great writing as usual, this sentence is a perfect summary of Starmer v Burnham “The new leader is a skilled choirmaster – in contrast to his predecessor, who knew the words but couldn’t carry a tune.”

Good points, all. However, something that surprised me during the referendum was the proportion of people who expressed a strong European identity. They got drowned out by the noisy nationalism amplified by the right wing press but they’re still here and possibly now growing!

Lexit is the strangest attitude of all. I can understand why right wing nationalists and small state libertarian types backed it but Lexit arguments are entirely ridiculous.

Also the current president and her predecessor hold tankie views re the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Embarrassing!

Micheál Mac Uidhir @deandeifer.bsky.social · 06/06/2026
At the beginning of Russia’s full scale invasion, a Ukrainian MP memorably described Lavrov as a “Joachim von Ribbentrop”, very apt! He toes the Putin line but has zero influence.

Alas, I agree. The president’s role is ceremonial and parliament and the people generally are much more pro-Ukraine. You’re definitely right regarding national security, on that, Ireland is woefully naive but slowly waking up to the real world.

Both Sunak and May are probably judged more favourably than their records merit because of the two appallingly bad prime ministers their tenures bracketed.

This is a very good summary of the UK’s Brexit situation as it is now. However, the centre right bloc which could lay out the business case just doesn’t exist and the centre left is at best half-hearted. Some sort of political re-alignment will be needed to even get this process started.
