Know Your Protest Rights

* You don't need a permit to protest in response to breaking news and you don't need a permit to march in the streets or along sidewalks, as long as you're not obstructing traffic or access to buildings.

* You have the right to photograph or film anything in plain view, including federal buildings and law enforcement, so long as you are not trespassing or violating a lawful order. You should not interfere with the actions of the government officials you are recording.
any injuries.

* If you get stopped by the police, ask if you're free to go. If they say yes, calmly walk away.

* If you get arrested, you have a right to ask why. Otherwise, say you wish to remain silent and ask for a lawyer immediately. Don't sign, say or agree to anything without a lawyer present.

* If you get stopped by a member of the military or any law enforcement officer at a protest, you have the right to remain silent or to tell them that you'll only answer questions in the presence of an attorney—no matter your citizenship or immigration status.

* If you believe your rights have been violated, when you can, write down everything you remember, get contact
information for witnesses, and take photographs
IF YOU INTERACT WITH ICE IN PUBLIC:

* Ask if you are free to leave. If so, you may calmly walk away.

* You have the right to refuse consent to a search.

* You have the right to remain silent. You do not have to discuss your immigration status with anyone, such as about where you were born, whether you are a citizen, or how you entered the country.

* If you have valid immigration documents, you should show them. Never provide fake documents.

*
If you are arrested, say that you wish to remain silent until speaking with a lawyer.

* You have the right to record your interaction with immigration agents as long as you do not interfere.

Today is World AIDS Day.

Please join us in taking time to pause and reflect on the importance of this day and to remember the many Deaf and signing loved ones, friends, and community members that were taken too soon from us by the AIDS pandemic. A list of these individuals can be found at https://deafaids.info.

The Names of Deaf Lost to AIDS/HIV website is updated once per year on this day.

If you know of someone missing from the list and/or have an obituary, photograph, video or other information about an individual listed, or would like to share a memory (in ASL or written English) that you have about one or more individuals you knew on the list, please submit it to names@deafaids.info.

If you don’t currently know your HIV status, today is a good day to make an appointment to get tested.

“Testing is the only way to know for sure if you have HIV. Knowing your status means you can keep yourself and your sexual partners healthy. Being diagnosed early gives you a better chance of living a long and healthy life.” —avert.org

We love you. 💜

Trans Day of Remembrance 2025

Today we honor the lives of our trans family who were taken from us through violence, hatred, and neglect. We remember them with love and with purpose.

According to the most recent global monitoring reports, at least 281 trans and gender diverse people were murdered in the past year. These are just those that we know of. Eighty-eight percent were Black or Brown. Many were activists, sex workers, migrants, and young people. Most were killed in Latin America and the Caribbean. Many were killed in their own homes or on the street. These numbers reflect not only loss but also a global pattern of racism, misogyny, and state violence that continues to target our communities.

In the United States, the Trans Remembrance Project recorded 58 deaths of trans and gender expansive people. This included 27 deaths from violence and 21 deaths from suicide. Youth made up 61 percent of the suicide cases.

Today we hold space for grief and remembrance. We also commit to building a world where our trans communities can live with joy, security, and freedom.

Every trans person deserves a future.

Community platforms like ours do not build themselves overnight. Every post, every follower, and every ounce of engagement takes time, care, and years of persistent labor.

For some reason, there are people who feel a sense of entitlement to our social media accounts. We receive, virtually daily, messages that make demands like “Post this,” often with no context, no thanks, and no awareness that they are asking for free labor from a vastly overextended and underfunded nonprofit.

That is exactly why we created a social media policy several years ago. It helps us set healthy boundaries and helps us stay focused on using our limited time and energy in ways that keep our work sustainable.

You can read it here: https://bit.ly/dqrcsocialmedia

Thank you in advance for understanding and honoring the ongoing love, time, and tireless labor that we pour into the Deaf Queer Resource Center to do this critical work that we do.

Today, the Supreme Court of the United States gave Donald Trump the power to enforce a cruel policy he implemented earlier this year that blocks transgender and nonbinary people from having passports that reflect who we are. This is state-sanctioned erasure and a direct attack on our freedom, safety, and dignity. Our identities are not up for debate. No court can ever erase who we are. No court can ever erase our truth. Trans rights are human rights, and come what may, we must keep resisting, keep organizing, and keep fighting with love for a future rooted in justice, liberation, and freedom for each and every one of us.

In this moment of emergency, we invite our community to join us for a Language Justice Forum. We will hear directly from experts in interpretation and translation, crisis translators who address the injustices of the immigration system as they support migrants to challenge the abuses they face. Additionally, we will hear from survivors of language rights abuses in ICE detention, translators from G4z@, and language workers from around the world mobilizing tirelessly to fight against the language violence and abuses.

We are building a network that can resist the brutality faced by migrants each day. Join us in community on October 30th.

Bottom line, the well has run dry. At this time, there will be no benefits issued November 01. We are approaching an inflection point for Senate Democrats. They can continue to hold out for healthcare for illegal aliens and gender mutilation procedures or reopen the government so mothers, babies, and the most vulnerable among us can receive critical nutrition assistance.”Image: Statements from DQRC.

Title: Weaponizing Hunger Is State Violence

“Weaponizing Hunger
Is State Violence
The Trump administration's move to cut off SNAP food benefits while blaming immigrants and transgender people is state violence disguised as policy. By claiming that hunger relief depends on denying health care to trans and undocumented communities, this administration weaponizes poverty and feeds the machinery of white supremacy, transphobia, and xenophobia. Turning a public lifeline into propaganda is a cruelty that punishes those already fighting to survive. We denounce this abuse of power and the propaganda that distorts truth, fuels hate, and dehumanizes our people. We stand rooted in care, truth, and solidarity with immigrants, trans, and all oppressed communities, knowing that our collective survival is an act of resistance and our liberation is bound together.”

We mourn the passing of Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, a fearless Black transgender elder whose life embodied the struggle for liberation, dignity, and justice. From the Stonewall uprising to her decades of advocacy for incarcerated trans women and communities of color, Miss Major taught generations to resist oppression and love each other fiercely in the face of state violence. Two arms with closed fists cross behind a thumbs-up hand, forming the ASL sign for “love yourself.”The outlines are semi-transparent, letting the rainbow gradient show through. Above, the text reads: “Love yourself hard.” A small handwritten signature appears in the bottom right.]

Know Your Protest Rights via @aclu.org
(Image: black background with white & yellow text)

KNOW YOUR PROTEST RIGHTS

1. You don't need a permit to protest in streets or on sidewalks if you're not obstructing traffic or access to buildings.

2. You have the right to photograph anything in plain view, including police.

3. If stopped by the police, ask if you're free to go. If yes, calmly walk away.

4. If arrested, ask for a lawyer immediately. Don't sign, say or agree to anything without a lawyer present.

Shameful. In a statement released today, the Trump Administration is equating gender-affirming care with "child abuse" and seeking to punish those who provide critical, life-saving support and services to our trans and gender diverse youth.

Gender-affirming care is NOT child abuse. It is a vital, evidence-based approach that empowers transgender and gender-diverse youth to live authentic, healthy lives. Gender-affirming care saves lives and reduces risks of depression, anxiety, and self-harm. Labeling gender-affirming care as “abuse” is dangerous, misleading and undermines the dignity and rights of our youth to be their true selves.

Happy Trans Day of Visibility! 🏳️‍⚧️ ⠀ Did you know?⠀ ⠀ The ASL sign for ‘transgender’ is similar to the ASL sign for ‘beautiful’ but is signed on the middle of the chest. Illustration by Deaf trans artist Carlisle Robinson. #TDOV #DeafTrans #DeafTransgender #DeafTransPride #ASL #QueerASLSigns ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Image description via Carlisle: an illustration of ASL for transgender in trans pride flag color. The sign starts with hands almost like high five but slightly bent with thumb a bit inside, as if you’re holding an egg. The hand is placed on chest with side of thumb and index finger touching your chest. Then the hand is moved away from chest with fingers in more closed, the hand is rotated that your palm is facing inward toward your chest. Then last sign is all fingers touching each other at fingertips, with side of your pinkie finger touching the chest.

#ProtectTransPeople Art by Kellie Martin #TransRightsAreHumanRight #DeafTransgender #DeafTrans #WeLoveYou
From Kellie Martin:

Trans and nonbinary people deserve to live safely, freely, and with dignity—without fear, discrimination, or harm. Their existence is not up for debate. It’s up to all of us to stand up, speak out, and protect our trans community. Support, uplift, and fight for a world where trans lives are valued, celebrated, and protected. 💖💙🤍
