Strong 7 out of 10 from me! Give A Listen To: “She’s The Best”, “Party”, “Embarrassingly”, “Troye Meets World”, “Love So Big It Hurts” Least Favorite Track: “Le Boy” Genre: Alternative Pop / Bedroom Pop / Trip-Hop / Neo-Psychedelia

Troye Sivan gets sunny and psychedelic on She’s The Best, mixing sugary romance with the energy of one huge, trippy party. Some ballads get a little goofy and his last album was tighter, but I love hearing him take risks. His current run remains STRONG.

Dawn Richard’s creole culture is sunny, soulful, heartfelt, and beautifully produced, with strong vocals throughout. There’s nothing really wrong with it, but for an artist known for taking risks, it feels surprisingly safe. Lovely record, just a little too on the rails.

One of my absolute obsessions in my teens. And what do you freakin' know, this is a killer single. It's got a fantastic riff, it's seductive, it's dangerous, it's got that SWEATY energy. If this continues, this new album is gonna rule ! www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTU4...

New one out today from Fontaines D.C., new album is very close! This new one features Rosalia too! And it's actually a very graceful, elegant, dreamy ballad with a lot of heart. It's definitely out of the band's wheelhouse, but I like it a lot www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxS3...

Decent 7 out of 10 from me Give A Listen To: “Smile and Wave”, “Go F**k Urself”, “Heart of Darkness”, “Call It What You Want”, “Snakes” Least Favorite Track: “Cancel Me (I’m Tired)” Genre: Electroclash / Synth-Punk / Synth-Pop

Fat Dog’s Cancel Me (I’m Tired) is messy, lowbrow, campy, and ridiculously fun. The sweaty dance cuts hit, the weirdo southern ballads are a blast, and the energy is hard to resist. I still prefer Woof, but Fat Dog remain completely inescapable for me.

Decent 8 out of 10 from me, and a MUST LISTEN Give A Listen To: “All The Rage”, “Covergirl”, “Mona Lisa”, “Lovesick”, “Blitz” Least Favorite Track: “Headscratcher” Genre: Indie Rock / Jangle Pop / Post-Grunge / Power Pop

Wishy’s Nature’s Pill is pure feel-good indie rock. Nothing here is new, but the heart, hooks, and ’90s alt-rock charm are undeniable. From jangle pop to post-grunge, it’s sunny, carefree, and ridiculously catchy. Easily on par with their debut.

Decent 7 out of 10 from Me Give A Listen To: “Illusion”, “Your Love Is Electric”, “Talk It Over”, “All Day, All Night”, “Watch You Dance” Least Favorite Track: “Fly Baby” Genre: R&B / Soul / Funk

Leon Bridges’ Happiness Anytime is bright, funky, flirty, and way looser than his recent work. It’s still rooted in vintage R&B, but the grooves hit harder and the energy feels fresh. A little too squeaky clean, but easily one of his most fun releases in years.

Julia Jacklin's The Gem might be my favorite album of hers yet. The busier, more indie-rock-focused sound makes her gorgeous vocals and vivid lyrics pop like never before. Some of the folkier moments still lose me, but this is exactly where I wanted to hear her go.

New one from Fontaines DC! New album is most certainly on the way! They really pushed themselves here. I like the electronic beat and bulky this comes off. It's pretty hypnotic! I do wish it was a little more energetic and punky. But still, im intrigued www.youtube.com/results?sear...

New one from one of my faves, Wolves In The Throne Room. It's a beefy cut, one thats certainly nasty. The playing is solid, so is the vocals. All of that is fine. But honestly, I'm shocked by how muddy this production is. www.youtube.com/watch?v=wU7D...

Protomartyr’s Hotel Usona is moody, somber, and occasionally mesmerizing, but it feels like all atmosphere and no crunch. I kept waiting for the tension and beefy riffs to kick in. Joe Casey is great, but even he can’t carry the whole thing.

#1 Labor Days One of my favorite albums ever. Aesop and Blockhead build this warped, woozy world around working-class America, and every listen gives me something new. Headier than hell, tragic, bizarre, brilliant. This album opened the door to underground rap for me.

John @deadairfm.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
#2 The Impossible Kid A biographical Aesop Rock album once felt impossible, yet here it is. The production may be his best, the beats stay wonderfully off-kilter, and he opens up about everything from isolation to aging to his cat Kirby. Funny, emotional, and essential.
100
John @deadairfm.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
#3 Spirit World Field Guide Aesop takes you on a surreal guided tour through the spirit world and somehow turns it into a meditation on creativity, inspiration, and survival. Sleek, bizarre, emotional, immaculate. It demands your full attention, but rewards every second of it.
100
John @deadairfm.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
#4 None Shall Pass I underrated this one for years. The production has aged beautifully, and you can hear Aes becoming more introspective, grounded, and reflective without losing his weirdness. If the early work feels too heady, this is one of the best entry points.

John @deadairfm.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
#5 Skelethon The album that made me fall in love with Aesop all over again. The writing is razor sharp, balancing humor, introspection, and genuinely grim moments, while the beats have a raw, dark punch. “ZZZ Top” still explodes out of the speakers.
100
John @deadairfm.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
#6 Black Hole Superette Another late-career flex. Aesop is still wildly charismatic, verbose, and funny, moving from personal cuts to bizarre posse tracks like “Charlie Horse” and “1010WINS.” It doesn’t reinvent anything, but the man clearly still has PLENTY to say.
100
John @deadairfm.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
#7 Float One of Aesop’s densest and strangest records. The anxious, dystopian writing can feel downright prophetic, and even at its weirdest it remains incredibly cool. But it’s a demanding listen, and some of the beats are hit or miss. Still essential.

John @deadairfm.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
#8 Integrated Tech Solutions A sleek late-career Aesop record with razor-sharp wordplay, sci-fi themes, and synthy flourishes that fit him perfectly. It’s grown on me less over time, though. Nothing here is bad, but it’s one of the less exciting and consistent albums of this era.
100
John @deadairfm.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
#9 Garbology Aesop and Blockhead reunite and instantly sound like they never stopped working together. The chemistry is effortless, Aes is sharp as ever, and Blockhead brings extra grit. My only issue? It’s more business-as-usual than a jaw-dropping comeback.
100
John @deadairfm.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
#10 I Heard It’s A Mess There Too Not terrible, just oddly unfocused. Aesop can usually rap about absolutely anything and make it fascinating, but a lot of this feels uninspired. “Opossum” and “Oh My Stars” are bright spots, but overall it plays like decent leftovers.
100
John @deadairfm.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
#11 Bazooka Tooth Another early Aes record that never fully clicked for me. “No Jumper Cables” is a classic, and the concept works, but this is much less consistent than I remember. Some beats are clunky, some production is choppy, but the highs are still very real.
100
John @deadairfm.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
#12 Music for Earthworms A hugely important record in Aesop lore, with gloomy beats and lo-fi mystery to spare. There’s some GREAT material here, but his flow is more sluggish and I’m not crazy about every beat. Not bad at all, he just got much better.

Got one more for y'all today, a treat. I'm here tonight with a ranking of Aesop Rock's discography. One of my favorite rappers ever, with one of the strangest, densest, funniest, and most rewarding catalogs in hip-hop. Even the lower-ranked records have something worth digging into. Let’s go.

Light 6 out of 10 from me Give A Listen To: “Blister Sunrise”, “Opera”, “Siren / Behold...Beasts”, “Losing Ground”, “Feeding Time” Least Favorite Track: “Soldiers of Lust” Genre: Progressive Electronic / Ambient / Post-Rock / Dream-Pop

M83’s I Wrote You A Letter has flashes of the emotion and nostalgia that made their early work so special. “Blister Sunrise” is incredible, and some of these soundscapes are breathtaking. But too much of it stretches thin and slips into wallpaper music.

Orville Peck’s Mule is a short, sweet surprise full of classic-country charm, huge vocals, and plenty of charisma. He’s not reinventing himself here, but he keeps revealing more of who he is. I just wish it were a little longer and denser.

Strong 6 out of 10 from me Give A Listen To: “Return To Dust”, “Rainman”, “Manifest”, “Best of Times”, “TV Star” Least Favorite Track: “Hila” Genre: Dream Pop / Synth Pop

John @deadairfm.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Frankie Rose’s HILA may be her dreamiest solo record yet. It’s smooth, misty, romantic, and full of gorgeous ’80s synth-pop atmosphere. The hooks don’t hit quite as hard as her best work, but she still does this sound beautifully.

Decent 6 out of 10 from me Give A Listen To: “I’m Your Girl Right?, “DNH”, “F.A.M.T.”, “I’m The Cake”, “Are We On A Break Least Favorite Track: “des fleurs” Genre: ElectroPop / Alternative Pop

John @deadairfm.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Tove Lo’s ESTRUS is decent, but it feels like a less consistent *Dirt Femme*. The highs are solid, emotional, horny alt-pop, and that side of her works better for me than ever. I just wish she tightened this up. Not bad, but definitely a step down.

Light 8 out of 10 from me, and a MUST LISTEN Give A Listen To: ”House By The Grave”, “Shapes of Midnight”, “Psycho On The Loose”, “The Other Side of the Sky”, “Sleep No More” Least Favorite Track: “When Evil Makes” Genre: Heavy Psych / Occult Rock / Doom Metal
000
John @deadairfm.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats’ Shapes of Midnight is a campy, horror-soaked doom record full of bulky riffs, great vocals, and eerie synths. It’s not reinventing anything, but it’s heavy, fun, and packed with classic occult-rock energy.

Finally I wanna chat quick about the new QOTSA single, maybe my favorite band of all time. I've been iffy on the singles lately. But while not too catchy, this is REALLY COOL. This is some straight-up "Rated R" era-sounding material. I hope they take more risks! www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAOI...

Beabadoobee’s Pylon is exactly where I want to hear her. Sunny, glistening alt-rock with equal parts sweetness and bite, plus a perfect early-fall atmosphere. She doesn’t push the sound very far, but it’s incredibly likable and one of her best in years.

Beck’s Ride Lonesome has the right personnel, production, and Sea Change-style palette, but almost none of the emotion. The first half is a total wash. A few psychedelic turns later on help, but for me this is a beautiful-looking wasteland.
