lol weird. We were just at the same store, assuming not this one.

I can‘t fully fathom that a cabinet secretary said this in public in a professional capacity.

Daniel Burkey @ddburkey.bsky.social · 30/09/2026

Regardless of anything else, the fact that a professional would speak this way in a professional setting, let alone a cabinet secretary, ought to be disqualifying. If I said this at work I would be fired and rightly so.

It continues to be a technology in search of a real problem to solve. It could go away tomorrow forever and everything would be just fine.

010

Daniel Burkey @ddburkey.bsky.social · 27/09/2026

Agreed. I quit for good finally after DOGE. There were a few years there where I really enjoyed the larger academic community I was part of, but basically all the people I liked interacting with left when it became what it is.

I suppose it is the natural response to the escalating costs of college - gotta put everything in terms of ROI. But I still really hate it.

110

Daniel Burkey @ddburkey.bsky.social · 27/09/2026

Yes. The “workforce development” speak that has absorbed college campuses is gross. A university doesn’t *only* exist to train workers. That has always been a part of it, but the foregrounding of that as the *sole* reason to attend has exploded.

"There is No Antimimetics Division" by QNTM and "This is How You Lose the Time War" by Amal El-Mohtar are two realy good ones...

Boooo. Hate the Friday night nasty gram. Dudes, just send it Monday morning and don’t ruin my weekend. Condolences.

I was confused. Like the Emmys are always Sunday?

Daniel Burkey @ddburkey.bsky.social · 11/09/2026

The tech and policy choices, the sheer amount of money. I remember feeling hope and optimism about the 21st century in the late 90s. It’s turned out very differently, and what I most feel most days is dread.

010

Daniel Burkey @ddburkey.bsky.social · 11/09/2026

It feels surprising, but probably shouldn’t, that you can pretty much draw a straight line from that response to where we find ourselves today. The last 25 years have not been kind to America, and I often think that we were indeed robbed of.

Daniel Burkey @ddburkey.bsky.social · 10/09/2026

These companies should be regulated into the ground. But the current administration is a 🤡 show, so, good luck everyone! 🤷🏻‍♂️

Daniel Burkey @ddburkey.bsky.social · 08/09/2026

YES. Capitalism only works if there are people to buy your stuff? This one boggles.

021

Daniel Burkey @ddburkey.bsky.social · 07/09/2026

We had a chiller pipe burst in my building a few years back. Coolant leaked all over my office, destroying a lot of personal stuff. University’s stance was that was my problem, not theirs. That was a frustrating week.

I just dropped mine at college. 🤪

Silo is one of the best pieces of SciFi on TV since BSG. S3E9 was amazing.

I loved that show. Have the DVDs. Cancelled on a cliffhanger. teenage me was very peeved.

Did this with Index Cards and my class attendance went back up to 80%+ after cratering post-Covid!

For a guy who hates universities, his companies sure seem to want to hire a lot of engineering grads...

Daniel Burkey @ddburkey.bsky.social · 10/08/2026

Yeah, I loved Rooster until it was like "We're going to give this lecturer a full professor appointment'. In STEM it's not the book, it's the Big Federal Grant, and shows like the Big Bang Theory did a similar disservice with how tenure in STEM fields is evaluated and granted.

Exactly - as a personal example, while the next D president may decide to negate many of the disastrous science, funding, & education policies of this administration, the damage is done - how many missed opportunities for students and missed discoveries because the current admin dislikes higher ed?

010

Daniel Burkey @ddburkey.bsky.social · 08/08/2026

If you liked it as a kid, which I did, it was fine. An enjoyable 2 hours. Nothing more than that so I think you‘re calibrated appropriately 👍

010

Daniel Burkey @ddburkey.bsky.social · 26/07/2026

Although - 2009! I thought this maybe was a new text on the latest and greatest. 😂

110

Daniel Burkey @ddburkey.bsky.social · 24/07/2026

It’s horrible here right now. Every day worse than the last.

010

Daniel Burkey @ddburkey.bsky.social · 23/07/2026

LOL - I don't think you'd survive that process my friend.

010

Daniel Burkey @ddburkey.bsky.social · 23/07/2026

Yeahhhh. This is…not good.

100

Daniel Burkey @ddburkey.bsky.social · 23/07/2026

Boooo. With the current administration I fear that all research directives are going to be AI heavy. 🫤

100

Daniel Burkey @ddburkey.bsky.social · 23/07/2026

Well, there are three choices here: 1.) They’re too stupid to see those connections, 2.) They don’t care because it hurts people they don’t like or care about or 3.) Some combination of 1 and 2.

041

Daniel Burkey @ddburkey.bsky.social · 23/07/2026

100% Literally the worst people in the world at the head of these companies. Read Empire of AI by Karen Hao if you want to see how terrible they are.

000

Daniel Burkey @ddburkey.bsky.social · 20/07/2026

LOL - I watched the Netflix documentary on her - awesome stuff!

Yeah, yesterday was nice. 🫤 Shouldn’t have gotten my hopes up.

010

Daniel Burkey @ddburkey.bsky.social · 18/07/2026

That’s the feature in their mind, not the bug. They want fewer people in college and they want colleges to fail.

000

Daniel Burkey @ddburkey.bsky.social · 17/07/2026

I hate this so much. Seeing the sky like this just ramps my anxiety to 1000.

I think it's time for the Ds to stop acting like old-school George McFly: "Now, Biff...". When did Biff finally understand? When George punched him in the f**king face.
