ALSO- Look at other cities. Austin e.g. might have either tenants rights on its web site or a tenants union. These could help you learn about what are state laws and what are local laws. It sucks but it really isn't that complex. Landlords (i.e. Trump) biggest liars and loudest whiners on earth.

There are laws. Many state laws, and some local. No lease supercedes actual law. You do not lose rights by signing a lease that's illegal. They lose standing if they have illegal things in the lease (or in actions). Small claims court. If no support, a half hour with a lawyer could be worthwhile.
