His talk was filled with magic and wonder, with the sounds of nature, birds and badgers echoing through the auditorium. “I believe that every one of us is born with an absolute grá for nature,” Ronayne said, and his mission is to help us rediscover that lost sense of awe. #DCUClimate2026 #DCU

It's time to share what is probably the most anticipated recording from the Institute's annual conference, which took place back in May at DCU St Patrick's Campus. Seán Ronayne brought a remarkable mix of tears, laughter, despair and hope to the conference. 👉 vimeo.com/1196422370/f...

At a time when climate records are being broken year after year, the panel asked a challenging question: what is hope and where do we find it? If you want to find out, watch the panel and join the conversation in the comments. #DCU #DCUClimate2026

Bringing together voices from the media, communications, academia, and governance, the panel explored the complex factors that have shaped our current climate reality. The panel looked at how social inequalities, political dishonesty, and climate denial contributed to the situation we face today.

The role of art in helping us hold the line was explored by Mia DiChiaro, who introduced the dance elements of the programme. These included an eco-dance film screening, available throughout the day in a breakout room, and two live dance performances that brought the conference to a close.

Dr Torney opened by reminding us of the urgency of the climate crisis. But also that this year’s conference invited participants to hold the line through innovative solutions, new approaches to farming, and, above all, hope.

She highlighted the inextricable link between the more than 130 armed conflicts currently affecting the world and the escalating impacts of the climate crisis. As Connolly stated: “The deafening silence around this connection should be called out by every one of us.”

The first recording we are sharing is the keynote address delivered by Ireland’s President, Catherine Connolly. In her speech, she addressed what she described as “the elephant in the room”: the normalisation of war.

For those who were unable to attend the Institute’s annual conference in May, the video recordings are now available. They offer plenty of food for thought, particularly if the recent spell of unusually hot weather on the continent has prompted reflection on some of the challenges we face.

He also spoke plainly about destruction: overgrazed hills, ripped-out hedgerows, collapsing ecosystems, and species becoming functionally extinct in Ireland within our lifetime. And yet the overwhelming feeling leaving the room was not despair. It was possibility. #DCUClimate2026

Through birdsong, city noise, neighbours arguing in Barcelona, puffins sounding like motorbikes, or fish “communicating like someone farting in the bath,” the ornitologist, author, and sound-recording artist showed that nature is not distant from us. We are part of it.

What is hope when every day reminds us of the climate breakdown happening around us? Sean Ronayne taught us that hope is about wonder. “I saw my daughter waving with excitement at an ant. At some point along the line, we lose that ability to wave at ants. But we shouldn’t.”

Change to address climate crisis 'not at required pace'
Transformative change to address the climate emergency is not happening fast enough, President Catherine Connolly has said.

Following her address, the President remained for a panel discussion on farming with Prof Pat Brereton, author of Farming in Ireland: Crisis and Climate, and environmental journalist and activist @thinkorswim.bsky.social, author of The Lie of the Land: A Game Plan for Ireland in the Climate Crisis.

President Connolly didn't ignore the elephant in the room - WAR. “We rarely speak about the emissions caused by war. Yet the normalisation of war and the climate crisis are inextricably linked. We all need to challenge the deafening silence surrounding this issue.”

“We are living through times of profound change: rising inequality and a growing sense that too many people are excluded from decisions that directly affect their livelihoods. To address this, we need imagination, courage, and a renewed commitment to building solutions from the ground up.”

DCU Institute for Climate and Society @dcuclimate.bsky.social · 12/05/2026
Addressing the researchers, academics, and students in the room, Connolly called for courage: “The courage to ask questions”. Reflecting on the scale of the transition ahead, she argued for a new paradigm that places climate justice at its centre.

In 2019, Ireland formally declared a climate emergency. Since then, the transformative change required either didn't happen, or it was too slow and too small. These were the words of Ireland’s President, Catherine Connolly, for the DCU Institute for Climate and Society’s Sixth Annual Conference.

This Labour Day, one thought stands out: Climate resilience is becoming a labour issue.
020
DCU Institute for Climate and Society @dcuclimate.bsky.social · 04/05/2026
The past winter was exceptionally stormy. For outdoor workers, street cleaners, construction crews, and renewable energy engineers, this isn’t abstract. It’s the reality of getting through a workday. Even if conditions are unsafe, Irish workers may not be entitled to pay if they can’t work.

DCU Institute for Climate and Society @dcuclimate.bsky.social · 04/05/2026
2026 is forecast to be the hottest year on record. Even in Ireland, summer temperatures are rising—whether or not it feels like it on a walk through Dublin. In July 2025, the Irish Labour Party called for legally defined maximum workplace temperatures. Important, but heat is only part of the story.

DCU Institute for Climate and Society @dcuclimate.bsky.social · 04/05/2026
We’ve recently marked Labour Day. In Ireland, it dates back to 1890, when Dubliners took to the streets demanding an eight-hour working day. Back then, the fight was for time. Today, it’s increasingly about conditions. Workers’ challenges are now shaped by the climate crisis.
