October 12, 1998, Matthew Wayne Shepard, a gay student at the University of Wyoming, who was beaten, robbed, and left tied to a wooden fence post outside Laramie, Wyoming died. Shepard’s murder brought national & international attention to hate crime legislation at both the state and federal level.

In legal news: A major loss in court today for the Capital Pride Stalker, Darren Pasha. The Honorable Judge Okun denied all pending motions that defendant Pasha had filed. There is currently a limited stay in the case until October 8, 2026 when a remote status hearing is scheduled.

The DC community has lost an icon. Savanna Wanzer has passed away. She dedicated her life to the transgender and LGBTQ community, championing education and representation. In 2007 Savanna founded Trans Pride in DC.
