Yesterday ~68 people employed in HHS's Administration for Children & Families early childhood offices were terminated. I'm told Office of Head Start lost ~20% of staff; Office of Child Care lost ~25% These workers process grants for preschools/childcare centers, monitor health/safety issues, etc.

These are funds that Congress appropriated that the Administration wants to simply take away from states, Tribes, and communities that were awarded funds to provide critical services.

Early childhood advocates should not rest easy. We saw how easily this Administration stopped payments. Congress needs to know how important these funds are to children, families, and communities. Many programs that support families could be impacted.

Adding more confusion- last week HHS was told to pause external communication so there was no information flowing from the agency to confused grantees as to why they couldn't access funds.

Here's what happened yesterday re: federal funding. OMB issued a very broad memo essentially directing all federal agencies to stop disbursing grant funds. HHS stopped allowing grant recipients to draw down funds that had already been awarded to them. Grantees rightfully panicked that they wouldn't
