Lord, please let Troy Jackson survive his close proximity to The Consultants nymag.com/intelligence...
Another source familiar with the campaign said, “I don’t even think it’s disdain for Maine so much as it’s just disdain for, more generally, people. They want to run this campaign through numbers and spreadsheets. And wherever a campaign is connecting with people or doing anything quirky or unique, they’re like, ‘This is bad and weird.’”

I see the return of Mitch McConnell's semiconscious rictus to public life has revived complaints that Andy Beshear should have done more to replace him (despite the fact that the underlying claim for an extraordinary remedy—dude was secretly dead—did not pan out.) Have a dose of political reality.
Folks, just some friendly advice here. Before I make demands of a Democratic governor of a red state to do something that’s likely to put state Republican lawmakers in a hysterical fury, I like to check on whether or not it’s likely that the governor will end up impeached. In this case, Republicans occupy 80 of the 100 seats in the state House (where you need 51 to impeach) and 32 of the 38 seats of the state Senate (where you need 26 to convict). So this maybe isn’t the best time for Beshear to bully his way into McConnell’s hospital wing like some righteous commando. Unless, that is, you want us to be down one blue-state governor (and one promising Democratic presidential candidate).

8th paragraph of the New York Times' retread of ProPublica's Collins' story. You know that crediting someone else's reporting hurt like hell, in most cases they simply wouldn't have done so.
In an email to ProPublica, which earlier reported the nature of the investigation, Ms. Clark added that the campaign ultimately returned the money. The committee sent the donations to a group that was rebuilding a school in Frenchville, Maine, that burned down in 2021, according to a person with knowledge of the move.

Words to live by.
We must scrupulously guard the civil rights of all citizens, whatever their background. We must remember that any oppression, any injustice, any hatred is a wedge designed to attack our civilization.

this nonsense can be dissected in a million directions but to the extent we have "moved on" it's in the direction of the logical endpoint of the so-called "global war on terror": a merciless and militarized surveillance state turned on the American people for fucks' sake, read your Spencer Ackerman

for a number of years I did an Andy Kaufmanesque bit at work where I insisted Seth Moulton wasn't a real guy but a fake politician I made up as a prank that then got out of hand maybe that guy would have gotten more votes though who knows
Tweet from me: it's also very much a sign of how crazy our politics are that I was able to invent a joke candidate named "Seth Moulton" and convince almost every single news outlet that this was, in fact, an actual living human being that was running for president

It was recently reported that Trump has taken to reading presidential biographies in recent months, which is a thing that you cannot get me to believe under any circumstances. That said, he really could stand to learn a lesson from Ronald Reagan.
From Politico:

WELCOME TO THE MACHINE: Donald Trump knows the polling on data centers is bad. He’s making the case for them anyway.

For the president, data centers are the “Golden Goose,” as he put it on Truth Social Monday. They’re one of the few investment engines humming in an otherwise sputtering economy, and a cornerstone of the administration’s strategic AI arms race with China. Trump is defending them because they’re also an albatross around Republicans’ necks heading into the November election.

“He looks at the polling. He looks at what people are saying,” a senior White House official told Playbook. “Polling isn’t necessarily great on data centers, but it’s incumbent upon us to explain our position. I think that’s part of what he was trying to do.”

And no small part of that position, as is often the case with Trump, is economics. The bright spot in construction is increasingly data centers, not the factories Trump promised through his push to reshore manufacturing.

“Trump is married to data centers no matter what because it’s the only real job creator,” one former Trump administration official told POLITICO’s Alex Gangitano.

JJ even got some quotes from Wisconsinites in the fight against data centers. This is Amanda Mueller, "I told our state senator to her face that she’s wishy-washy, and she got really upset. But the people who lead us need to be tougher than that." I like the cut of her jib.
I’ve never protested. I’m a 67-year-old lady. The only time I’ve been a menace to someone was when I took sailing lessons. I wanted to mind my own business, but suddenly I’m taking on towns and cities, and even the whole state. I’ve come to realize we’re all in this together, and we can do this together. Even though people are so trodden on and so defeated, there’s still this little voice that won’t go away. And that’s America truly being America.

For anyone who’s looking to get involved, remember that facts speak truth. A lot of people in suits are going to tell you that you don’t matter. They’ll say you’re small and you should crawl back under your rock. So you need thick skin.

But if this keeps you up at night, you should do something. Even if that just means going to a town meeting and telling people it’s wrong. And when you speak to government people, don’t be afraid to tell them like it is. I told our state senator to her face that she’s wishy-washy, and she got really upset. But the people who lead us need to be tougher than that.

if only there had been some clue that Trump might deceive people or have no consideration for anyone's well-being other than his own, but it's impossible to say, we're all just left reeling at the president's wholly out-of-the-blue actions here
WaPo headline and dek:

They were on the plane when Trump secretly left. Here’s what they noticed.

The journalists traveling with the president had no idea he had switched planes due to a perceived threat from Iran. Now some say the operation has left them feeling deceived and questioning whether the White House considered their safety.

"Flanagan said she would avenge Minnesota and I will personally hand her the sword." substack.com/app-link/pos...
So why is it that Minnesota pundits don’t seem to be able to admit this? It’s the same dynamic you see in national news where they only view liberals and progressives as having agency. Take this relatively good recap of Flanagan’s victory over Craig. Start with these facts: Crytpo, AI, Israel’s genocide, and the ICE occupation are all EXTREMELY unpopular and outside the mainstream. Why, then, is Craig—who can be closely tied to all these extreme positions—viewed as closer to the mainstream than Flanagan?

Why do media pundits act like this? A politician who forcefully advocates for extremely popular opinions and opinions that also greatly motivate voters is viewed as coming from a fringe whereas candidates like Craig and Tafoya are viewed as mainstream? Of course you’re going to struggle to understand political results if you refuse to acknowledge reality.

the house always wins
Tariff refunds have begun rolling in to big U.S. companies—in some cases providing a solid boost to earnings.

Contrary to warnings that the refund process could prove slow and messy, many companies appear to have received the money with remarkable speed. So far, over 40 S&P 500 companies have reported some $9.6 billion in refunds in the past quarter or so, including at least $2.1 billion in cash already received.

Among the biggest refunds reported so far: Apple, at nearly $2.2 billion; Nike, at $986 million; FedEx, at about $800 million; Amazon.com, at $640 million; and General Motors, at $500 million.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection had received just over 252,000 refund applications as of July 31 for tariffs declared unlawful by the Supreme Court. The customs agency accepted $128.7 billion in refunds for processing, an agency official told a federal court last week.

So late to this but I wonder how many nails the White House Correspondents' Association's coffin needs (from: www.readtpa.com/p/dinner-the...)
The WHCA played a video featuring a computer-generated James Madison, who appeared onscreen to inform the room that “The government doesn’t get to shut the press up.” A living journalist saying that sentence into the microphone, to the president’s face, might have been a risk. A cartoon of a man who died in 1836 saying it is weak slop. AI-resurrected founders are usually a PragerU and Glenn Beck genre, the kind of thing I cover as right-wing propaganda. The press corps has now adopted the right’s format in its own defense. That’s roughly where we are.

well how about that
Speaking to Quinones, Vega said that while reporting a piece in the wake of the fatal shootings or Rene Good and Alex Pretti in Minnesota, she was encouraged to include footage of protesters violently attacking people in the streets whom the demonstrators believed to be ICE officers in plain clothes. But Vega said her team could find "no credible examples" of such behavior at the time.

Moreover, Vega said her team was asked to include a supposed moment from a press conference in which the city's Democratic mayor, Jacob Frey, said he wanted local police to fight ICE agents in the streets to stop immigration activity, and that the city's police chief rolled his eyes at the suggestion. Vega said her team scrubbed every frame of video from the press conference, but never found such a moment, deeming it "misinformation."

"That never happened," she said. "We could not find any instance of the mayor saying something like that."
