Immaculate evil company CV from Palantir
The Verge article text on Palantir “You've probably heard about some of its projects. It built the Maven Al-powered targeting system that made its wartime debut earlier this year in Iran. It designed a mapping system that can generate targets for ICE agents in real time. It developed a search engine for the Department of Health and Human Services that allowed DOGE employees to identify and cancel more than $780 million worth of grants linked to DEI initiatives. It is even working on a "mega-database" of US citizens and their financial information for the IRS.”

Some alien scouts rescued her, Julian May said so in her book Intervention and I choose to believe her version of events
The male and the female scouts stood at attention with screened minds and dry, impassive faces. Bali Ala had a harder time of it than her comrade because the small animal in her arms was squirming wildly and resisting her attempts at coercion. The Simbiari enforcer scowled and added his coercive quotient, but the beast only struggled harder, gave a sharp yap, and jumped free. It made a dash for the still-open door and would have escaped if Ma'elfoo had not zapped its brainstem very gently, paralys-ing it in its tracks.
Enforcer Amichass, mortified and glistening with green sweat, retrieved the creature and set it like a stuffed toy beside the two crewmen on report. I'm sorry about that, Commander. A recalcitrant species that resists_'
'Never mind, Vorpi sighed. 'Get on with it. What do you two have to say for your-selves? Of all the sophomoric idiocies - pinching the damn Russian dog!'
'Her name is Laika, Misstiliss said.
Bali Ala said, 'The power-source of the vehicle's environmental system was almost exhausted. The animal was about to perish

Agree with Alan Moore on this, Thatcher did psychic damage to the UK we haven’t recovered from 40 years later. Think Trump is doing the same in the US, as is Netanyahu in Israel, they’ve broken the grand narrative and those countries will pay the price
That seems to me to be almost literally true. I remember that since the early '8os, I've felt that in this country, at least, an awful lot of the damage that has been done is actually psychological in its basis. I felt that Margaret Thatcher had very possibly managed to erode or destroy a lot of the ideals and symbols that social life in this country had been based upon. And that if you destroy those etheric territories, if you destroy those symbolic things, the real things will come tumbling after that. For me, this was the lesson of the Thatcher years.

In a Times article full of maddening things, the fact that a panel of Leave voters all say Brexit was bad for the country but if they could travel back in time all but one of them WOULD STILL VOTE LEAVE is sending me straight into the void
With very few exceptions the Long Eaton voters felt — as did the 1,690 adults from across the country surveyed by YouGov-that Brexit had been a failure. "Forgotten",
"disappointing" and "disastrous" were words that they used to describe it, although only one person in the focus group said they would change their vote if the referendum were rerun.

It’s a small thing but quite an indicator of where the ultrarich heads are at this point you can donate to Jack Clark’s Substack at a number of price points. As a founder of Anthropic, his current net worth is estimated a $15.5 billion dollars.

Every AI article is basically this one at the moment
000
David Burrows @dburrows.bsky.social · 06/05/2026
On the one hand the message is “AI is going to replace everyone” in the real world…
Take Alpha Arena, run by tech startup Nof1. It pitted eight major frontier Al systems — including Anthropic's Claude, Google's Gemini, OpenAl's ChatGPT and Elon Musk's Grok — against each other in four separate competitions. Each was handed $10,000 per contest before being turned loose on US tech stocks for two weeks. The challenges involved trading on a variety of signals, acting defensively, reacting to the competition, and using high leverage.
The portfolio as a whole lost about a third of its capital. Across all 32 sets of results, a model finished in profit only six times...
"LLMs can't really make money by themselves," said Jay Azhang, founder of Nof1. "You need basically a very sophisticated harness and scaffolding and data platform in order to even give them a chance."

The age of finding out about AI costs is upon us, if you used Opus a lot your Copilot subscription just got worth 5x less, but it’s probably worse as the credits you get seem to be changing - the docs are as clear as mud, probably on purpose

Again, I’m asking what your argument is for thinking they’ll be successful, and is it just “because AI”? They don’t appear to be very good at running a shoe company, why would they be good at this?

David Burrows @dburrows.bsky.social · 15/04/2026
I’m calling the AI peak at today, 15th April 2026. Allbirds, the shoe company was about to go bust but announced a last minute pivot to AI infrastructure and the stock went up 461%. We have officially hit peak Pets.com dotcom boom levels of insanity.
Allbirds Inc., the once-buzzy maker of wool sneakers valued at more than $4 billion in its heyday,
announced a new business plan just days before it planned to close down for good: Al computing infrastructure.
And in a market that's reacted in knee-jerk fashion to just about anything related to artificial intelligence, it did just that — sending Allbirds stock up as much as 461% after the opening bell.
The response underscores the intensity of the speculative mania around Al, which has fueled stampedes into would-be winners and panicked rushes away from any industry that seems poised to be hit by the competitive threat.

As predictions go, this summary of the world of Maureen F McHugh’s China Mountain Zhang (1992) by Jo Walton seems pretty plausible at the minute
This is a world dominated by China. At some time in the past, the USA has had a proletarian revo-lution, and at some time only about fifteen years ago has had the Cleansing Winds Campaign, an overwhelming event like the Cultural Revolution in China. Global warming has made much of the interior of the USA uninhabitable. Mars is being settled. Everything is socialist, but there are cracks.
