They seem to follow a pattern. 1. Have good intentions, model ALL risks, stack-rank. 2. Try to address them while not learning how to communicate with people. 3. It predictably doesn't work (since the masses aren't reading their essays) 4. The stakes are too high, game the system at all costs.

I believe the danger created by people at AI labs assigning a 10% chance to AI destroying humanity is greater than the actual risk of AI doing so (which I think is far, far lower). Believing the stakes are existential can justify terrible decisions.

The nuance on the latter bit is that this isn't something that comes from pre-training, but is explicitly the result of capabilities designed-in during post-training. It doesn't make it less scary, but the accountability is much clearer.
