Despite getting 3x less screentime than men, women are far more often the subject of closer shots, receiving 20% more medium close-ups. 6/7

We measure the changing use of camera distance (closeup, medium shot, etc.) across 5,205 movies over time, finding big changes with the introduction of sound (~1928) and television (1950-1975) -- both drawing the camera closer -- but not yet with the rise of smartphone viewing. 5/7

We built models to recognize the characters present in animated films in order to measure gender representation. As a wholly created world, animation need not inherit the same biases as live-action films, but it largely does (less for human characters, much more so for non-human ones) 4/7

Which had me look up that song in my Shazam history (yes I had to Shazam it), and sure enough it was there — the only time I’ve been able to pinpoint the exact moment a research idea took shape (1:38pm on 7/14/23)

While we might expect the singer-songwriters of the 1960s to be a high-water mark for narrativity, we find the opposite: narrativity has been steadily increasing, largely due to the rise of the strongly narrative genres of hip hop and rap.

Flying back today from a circuit of some (not all!) of the great DH centers in Germany (Darmstadt, Bielefeld, Leipzig and Würzburg). Such great energy and amazing people moving the field forward at each one. I'm bringing back lots of ideas.

I love concerts that are albums, *and* this particular album, but really did it have to be this one day?

So long Paris! #CHR2023 was a fantastic conference; great to catch up with so many colleagues and meet more all doing fascinating work. I’ll definitely be sending work there in the future. (And I’m bringing back a bag full of the souvenirs that matter.)

I think of these two as the “German Ted” and “American Fotis” — finally in the same room!
