a zillion Dunlin take flight

several hundred Dunlin birds (which appear in the shot almost as white dots) take off from a muddy beach. In the foreground is a yellow salt marsh, in the background a small boat and dock complex.

Here are some dots on mud to look at too. Maybe 200-500 Dunlin pecking about on the mud; and also a curious large concentration of small birds roosting with a big white bird.

Very busy afternoon out on the mud at Portishead today - amongst all the usual Redshank were some Knot, a Curlew Sandpiper and a Spotted Redshank.

Today we spied a large (500?) flock of Dunlin* in the distance at Chapel Pill (between Portishead and Portbury Dock). *there's probably a few little minglers in there too but at the distance it's too hard to tell.

Today's super-high tide (13.7m) pushed a lot of the local waders up onto the Portbury Wharf island - 100+ Dunlin, 100+ Redshank, 7 Ringed Plover and a Greenshank.

A noisy little mixed gang of 25++ tits often descends on our garden - 10-15 LTT, 5++ Blue, several Great & Coal (and sometimes a little ChiffChaff is in with them). Today these two borbs were having a roundness contest.

Over the last few weeks we've been hearing a Green Woodpecker from our house but never been able to see it. Today the noises seemed unusual and in different places. After a fleeting glimpse of flight towards a tree, finally spotted a pair. Think one on left is a little youngster.
