Happy #EarthDay! Spent the day on a boat with students, a professor, and the founder of the Coastal Marine Education & Research Academy to observe research on sharks and rays. I even got to tag a ray! The TL;DR story airs Monday, to be followed by a more in-depth look at this work later.

The Doctor’s quote in the latest episode of Starfleet Academy “Vox in Excelso” really struck a chord with me and I couldn’t find an image of it yet so I made one.
A screenshot from the latest episode of Starfleet Academy with Robert Picardo’s holographic doctor character speaking to cadets in a debate class. The cadets chose the topic of whether Starfleet should force the Klingons to accept their help to avoid extinction. The quote is “There’s been a tragedy. Don’t compound it with ignorance.”

I've been going to MOSI since the early 2000s. It was sad to see them struggling financially and closing exhibition spaces. But the science museum's newest expansion (and name to go with it!) is pretty exciting. Here's what I saw this week during the unveiling.

@kellythejournalist.bsky.social is so right. When I speak to journalism students still being taught that we “give voice to the voiceless,” I point out it’s an outdated, ego-driven mantra. Our job is to amplify voices. To empower people to share their lived experience & knowledge. They have voices.

Seven years ago today I was privileged to be healthy enough to donate a kidney to my sister. I’m so grateful my health issues, which are completely unrelated, started after this. (Forgive the Harry Potter reference. It was a different time.)
Two smiling siblings in hospital gowns on a hospital bed. They’re holding up matching shirts that have gold foil kidneys, a little trail of footsteps, and the words “transplant managed” in the Harry Potter font. A purple haired person on a hospital gown and white abdominal binder greets their sister, who is lying in a hospital bed, for the first time after transplant. They’re both crying.

Went to SYFY Bartow Saturday and picked up a book from a Lakeland author that I'm really excited about. "The Chasing Collection" is a zombie trilogy, and the prequel is from a journalist's perspective! It'll pair well with my Newsflesh series from Mira Grant.
A pale-skinned person with thigh tattoos balanced a hardcover book on their lap. Its by RM Hamrick, and is called "The Chasing Collection: Zombie Tagger Edition." The cover has three feminine people on it, one walking toward the reader and two with their backs turned. It's a combination of the covers of the three books sold separately.

Tonight during Winter Solstice I’m celebrating the eventual return of the sun, and a new year of light and growth. Right now I’m focusing on honoring all the reasons that make life worth living to help sustain me during this next period of my life.

Started my morning off in Tampa at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention walk in memory of my dad, Donald Miller, a USMC veteran who died by suicide on Jan. 4, 2021. He was failed by his country & the VA, but leaves a legacy of love, wonder, & curiosity in me, my sister, & his grandkids.
A group of six adults and two children decked out in warmer clothing for the cold morning pose in front of a long blue American Foundation For Suicide Prevention Banner for the Out of the Darkness Community Walk. They’re holding various signs that say things like stop suicide, real convo, and be the voice. It’s a crisp December day at the park and the sky is very blue, the sun just barely up over the horizon. Eternally proud of my sweet spouse @joerocks1981.bsky.social for turning an idea into a tangible #ttrpg that is beloved by our friends and many strangers who have encountered it. Joe did the distinctive art, the writing and the layout - and it’s one of my favorite things to talk about with folks.

Behind it is a stack of the same book and a very out of focus and partial bearded white man.
