When I’m not taking care of the cats, I’m taking care of my plants. Here’s a few of my favorites from earlier this year.

Several plants in a window. One is an avocado tree with a thin trunk and hand-sized green leaves. Another is a ficus with leave that have pink around the edges. Next to that is a small pilea with thin stems and round, silver dollar-sized leaves. Hanging in the window is a tradescantia with twisty hanging-down stems and narrow ish purple leaves.

Young philodendron melanochrysum with deep, dark green leaves that have a velvety texture.

Three cacti, narrow with the tallest a lot the length of my palm in a pot with a plastic pink flamingo and a d20.

These are the furbabies, Rogue and Tosh. Rogue is my 19/yr grumpy lady. Tosh is my 17/yr snuggle bunny who just wants to be loved.

Grey and white tabby cat curled up in a ball next to me on the sofa. I made the mistake of waking her from her nap so her expression is one part sleepy and one part annoyed.

Tosh is a cali/turtle/tabby mix laying on her side with her paws extended in my direction so she can touch me.

Aside from Prince down at the end (the purple one, duh), the rest of the peperomia shelf needs names. This is my life now. Work, plants, games. Occasionally movies, but I am SO BEHIND.

A row of 5 varieties of peperomia. All in small, 2-in pots. One is about 4in tall with red stalks and the rest are low to the pots with small leaves of half an inch or so in diameter. One is a fully red-purple color, one is a silvery green with red veins, one with dark green veins and light green leaves and the last is a silvery green leaf with reddish undersides.

This is Ed. I didn’t choose Ed. Ed just arrived as a mystery +1 in a purchase I made. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Ed has been more resilient than the plants I actually chose. I don’t know if a pilea is quirky enough for the name Ed, but time will tell.

Baby pilea in a pot. Pilea have almost round leaves on long stalks, giving them an almost lollipop appearance. The plant is small, in a 2-inch pot, but there are multiple new growths coming up.

If George and Romero look a little scraggly, that’s ok. For a couple of plants that straight-up DIED, I think they’re doing pretty good. So are their kids, which were propped when I accidentally ripped off the vines. Don’t ask. I feel bad enough, but I’ve got 7 kids in pots out of it.

2 Hoya wayetti in pots with 4+ propagations going. Hoya have 2-3in leaves, oval, with a crease down the center. They don’t have visible veins and are medium green with darker green edges.

Cupid’s throwing flowers now. This is the first and I see at least one other starting. I didn’t know strings flowered, but that’s what an impulse purchase gets me. 🤭

This week in retail therapy: I. GOT. NEW. PLANTS. They don’t get names until I’ve kept them alive for at least a month. I have a couple getting names this this weekend, if I remember, I’ll post pics.

Alocasia Purpley - plant with broad triangular leaves with bright lime veins and a dark green/purple leaf. The sign behind it (obscured) is a figure in a long-beaked plague mask with the words: It rubs the soap upon its hands or else it spreads the disease again.

Philodendron melanochrysum: somewhat heart-shaped leaf with a velvety texture and dark green-black color.

I talked to exactly one person this weekend. It was glorious. I had to pretend to be an extrovert all last week and needed the recharge. Also, got shit done.

Before: Starting to lay down the weed cloth where the paving stone patio and pergola will go.

After: Newly assembled pergola in the back year with weed cloth down where the paving stones for the patio beneath/around.

Austin forecast for the next week showing temps in excess of 100 degrees Fahrenheit every single damn day. Like almost every day for the last month.
