Early this morning I received initial briefings on the Moss Landing battery energy storage fire.

Although initial cleanup and battery removal, under the supervision of the federal EPA, were completed two weeks ago, 1,500 hard-to-access batteries remain in the damaged area of the facility.

This incident is ongoing, and we don’t yet know all details.

I strongly ask surrounding communities to follow all safety instructions from emergency services.

The Protect Our Democracy Act, advanced to the Governor’s desk for enactment. If signed into law, AB 1539 would enforce the Twenty-Second Amendment and bolster federal constitutional safeguards against attempts to place ineligible presidential or vice-presidential candidates on California’s ballot.
Background: polling place
Text:
AB 1539
Protect Our Democracy GOTE
Makes it a crime to try to place someone on the ballot for President or Vice President if they are not legally eligible to serve because they have already reached the constitutional term limit.“Our nation established a vital two-term limit for the presidency to prevent abuse of power. Our current President flouts the Constitution and the courts - and has claimed he can, and may, try to be elected for a third term. Therefore, California must create a strong backstop against his overreach. AB 1539, with the help of Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis for the first time ever - makes it a crime under penalty of perjury to place someone on the ballot for President or Vice President if they are not legally eligible to serve because they have already reached the constitutional term limit."
Dawn Addis
Assemblymember, 30th District“Protecting the integrity of our democracy is a responsibility we all share. AB 1539 strengthens the constitutional safeguards that have guided our country for generations by ensuring that presidential and vice presidential candidates meet the eligibility requirements already established in the Constitution. This bill simply reinforces the rules already in place and affirms a fundamental principle of our democracy: no one is above the Constitution. As a proud sponsor, 1 am delighted to see AB 1539 pass the legislature and want to thank Assemblymember Addis for her leadership on this issue.
Eleni Kounalakis
