![Heat Illness and Death.
As a small farmer and zoologist, I was always aware of heat.
In an average year, extreme heat kills more US citizens
Than all hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods combined.
Organ failure is a common symptom that leads to death.
When the body is exposed to high heat, it attempts to cool down
By sweating and redirecting more blood to the skin,
Resulting in less oxygen and blood going to the gut.
Also, even in dry heat, but with high humidity,
It is harder to cool off, because sweat does not
Evaporate as well when one is in high humidity.
If blood reduction occurs for too long, the gut becomes more
Permeable, causing toxins in the gut to begin leaking out.
These toxins cause inflammation or blood clots,
Which if left untreated, can lead to multiple-organ failure.
Heart attacks are another serious heat-problem.
When a heart pumps more blood to the skin for cooling,
Arteries widen with less blood, which lowers blood pressure.
Thus the heart must pump harder to maintain normal pressure.
This added stress on the heart may trigger a heart attack or stroke.
Another problem when working in high heat is kidney failure.
Sweating causes water loss; in one hour, up to 1.5 liters can be lost.
Blood plasma, which is about 55% of the total blood volume,
If not replenished, causes dehydration and lowers the blood volume.
Then, the heart and kidneys must work harder,
Maintaining blood pressure,which may lead to fatal kidney failure.
In addition, if muscle tissue breaks down releasing
Proteins into the blood, these materials can clog kidneys.
By now, it is pretty evident what one must do to prevent these issues.
One thing to remember for sure, is that high humidity
Is far more dangerous than dry heat alone.
Throughout my life I have farmed and carried out field work.
I am still here at 85, so I must have done something correctly!

I began thinking about this, wondering just why that is so.
Well, my research uncovered an interesting narrative.
Words like 'dumb' and 'numb' have silent 'b's because of
A great shift in English pronunciation
Called 'consonant cluster simplification'.
The 'b' sound disappeared long ago, but the spelling remained.
Old English was pronounced 'dum-b' and 'num-b',
And this is still heard in some Germanic languages
Such as in Icelandic, where lamb (lam) is voiced 'lam-b'.
The sounds 'm' and 'b' together were awkward.
Dropping the final 'b' made speech smoother and faster.
This is called phonotactics: the 'rule'
Of making sounds easy to say together.
So, Mr. Trump, would one now be able
To further criticize you for 'dumbness'?

The new French conquerors adopted the name
To be left as such in perpetuity.
Now another aspiring conqueror is mandating his new name.
Because he cannot fully bully the nation of Canada, and unable
To get what he wants, he has renamed the lake out of spite.
Following his 'Gulf of America,' he is calling Ontario 'Lake America.'
Most likely, when he is gone, the former name will recur.
Such disruptive actions are nothing more than childish.

As the military leader, the president often builds
A strong bond with his soldiers.
George Washington had to work tactfully to maintain his armies.
Today, the USS Abraham Lincoln seems to be in crisis,
Having remained at sea for 250 days (now more) without any port visits.
Dysfunctional plumbing, poor food, and limited calls home
Seem to have demoralized the seamen to a serious level.
One or more seamen are reported to have jumped overboard.
When the Commander-in-Chief was asked about the 250 days,
The questioner queried if 250 days was too long.
The answer was unemotional: "Not nearly long enough."
Will such an answer yield wavering confidence in the minds
Of our fighting members, to follow their leadership's commands?
