As I write, the number one video cassette rental in American is the movie Dum and Dumber. Beavis and Butthead remains popular (and influential) with young TV viewers. The plain lesson is that study and learning - not just of science, but of anything - are avoidable, even undesirable.

I understand that "The People (TM) are cackling evilmongers" is not a useful paradigm, but goodness, "The People (TM) are highly susceptible to magical thinking and can barely remember four years ago" is not a heartening alternative.
