David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 07/10/2026I saw this rather pristine bracket on a silver birch on Alderford Common yesterday. The iNaturalist app suggests it’s Fomitopsis betulina 1121
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 04/10/2026I think this is the screen Simon is referring to (guess who recently learned to search his photos by location) 160
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 03/10/2026@simonknott.bsky.social I’m really sad to see that since you visited Ludham last a part of the rood painting has disappeared. 4192
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 01/10/2026I was talking to a spritely and interesting 91 year old church warden this week. We started talking about St Benet’s and he expressed consternation at the vandalism of its gate house to turn it into a drainage mill. I suppose history is more recent for some than others! 010
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 29/09/2026I found these today. They were next to a hedge beneath a couple of oak trees. At first I thought they were fallen bracket fungi but the were firmly rooted in the ground. I wonder if they’re some kind of boletus as the one I picked had pores. 141
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 28/09/2026These grotesque and weather worn little faces look like they might be much older than the rest of the porch. All Saints Rackheath. 060
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 26/09/2026I thought this was a ringed plover but I looked it up and it’s not one of those. An app tells me it’s a turnstone but I’m not sure. It was a bold little bird running around eating the crumbs from people’s sandwiches and getting very close to them. 140
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Yesterday I walked 16 miles from Walcott to Hoveton and saw loads of geese arriving to spend winter on the Broads. It’s a shame they were drowned out by the traffic for much of this video as I love the honking they do. 150
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Installation art north of Hoveton… or it could be some poly tunnels 🤔 010
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 23/09/2026I think this is a chinese water deer. I saw it just north of Somerton. 020
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 23/09/2026Have you any idea what species the dragonfly was? That church is a testament to ego but it is amazing. The pulpit is also blingy 110
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 23/09/2026This example of Eeeeek Eeeeeekius blocked my path today 130
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 18/09/2026Honestly, Norfolk and it ridiculous places names 🙄 It’s probably pronounced unmohicle 0102
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 18/09/2026I doubt these carvings are really ancient but I love them. The first one looks like Marty Feldman. Toft Monks church 050
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 18/09/2026Perfect day for a walk. Toft Monks church is within sight. 130
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 17/09/2026These are a remarkable achievement. Given how salty and strong marmite is they’ve managed to use it to make the blandest coated nuts possible. A real disappointment. 031
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 16/09/2026The home of this dainty brown dragon fly is an old church that is not unusual in any way at all. No siree. Just another Norfolk church 240
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 15/09/2026Not great photos because I couldn’t get my phone camera to focus very well but I encountered a large harvestman (an opilione) crossing my path whilst determinedly carrying something which I can’t make out 030
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 12/09/2026Currently in a disagreement as whose lunch this is 020
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 12/09/2026Letheringsett to the west of Holt is another of Norfolk’s round towered churches. It has a few treasures inside including a spectacular reredos and a carved head sprouting arms and legs (had mushrooms been taken?) and a head that reminds me of a little girl in a cartoon strip I can’t quite remember. 010
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 11/09/2026There is also a very unusual and touching memorial bench in the graveyard. 2/2 070
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 11/09/2026Glandford church was mostly reconstructed in the early years of the 20thC. It was done in honour of the local bigwig’s mother. I’ve seen a couple of sniffy comments about it but I love it. 1/2 1313
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 09/09/2026A mob of mushrooms. I wonder what they’re worked up about? 000
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 09/09/2026Wiveton church is close enough to the church at Cley that each can be seen from the other. When it existed the harbour at Cley could probably have been seen from the churchyard. There are a couple of of interesting brasses in the floor. I particularly like the shrouded corpse. 020
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 08/09/2026I love pew end carvings in churches. I try not to post too many to avoid being a bore but I’d be interested in peoples opinions on what these might represent. They’re both from Cley-Next-the-Sea. Please retweet because I’d like to get as many ideas as possible. 65219
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 07/09/2026Shelton Church from July last year. The interior light was quite uplifting . It has a very interesting tomb showing a pious family group. They don’t look like they were much fun. I don’t think it on the toad to anywhere but worth a detour for a look. 1122
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 06/09/2026Cley-Next-the-Sea is also popular with mystery writers who visit in order to stock upon red herring 050
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 06/09/2026Cley church must be one of the most beautiful in Norfolk and contains many strange and interesting things. Worth a visit. 29220
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 06/09/2026View from the door of Cley church. This would once have looked out onto a harbour. 0141
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 04/09/2026Not the most beautiful thing I found yesterday but probably the most interesting. The death mask and epitaph of Johnson Jex whose name sounds like the start of a limerick. 150
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 03/09/2026The ford which gives Glandford its name. The river is of course the… Glaven 🤨 050
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 01/09/2026I just arrived at All Saints, Kelling and thought it wad an outbuilding and looked around for the church 🤣 240
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 01/09/2026Bodham Church. First of the day and it’s locked. 150
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 28/08/2026Always pleased to see the ivy bees are back in Earlham Cemetery 291
David Widdick @davidwiddick.bsky.social · 11/08/2026I think these may be getting ready to fly back to Africa 020
