Treated to two outstanding games yesterday. Was surprised to see FC Tokyo struggle so much once they went down to 10 men. Great for us to get a deserved win against Avispa. I think it'll be between Kobe, Kashima, Hiroshima and i still like Urawa. What about you?

Very impressed with Norwich (#NCFC) last night in Switzerland. Against a top flight team who won the Swiss cup last year and who are at the end of their pre-season, to go in and win 3-0 away from home with half your squad missing is some statement. Got a feeling this is going to be an exciting year.

In 30+ years of watching football for both pleasure and work, I've never seen a manager mismanage a game as badly as Thomas Tuchel last night for England vs Argentina. Truly awful decision making that cost England the game and a chance of moving to their first WC final since 1966.

The media will have you believing that only Jordyn Tyson has WR1 potential in this draft. They never learn, nobody had Puka as a WR1, or St Brown, or to a lesser extent Nico Collins etc. So many examples. I've said it elsewhere, if Denzel Boston is a better pro than Tyson, wouldn't be surprised.

I don't think anyone smiles as much in baseball as Takahiro Ikeyama. Although...If I were picked to finish last by nearly everyone and started the season 10-4, I'd be smiling too. Well, as a Swallows fan I am smiling.

Absolutely, The gap between the top teams and the second tier teams is monumental. Then the gap from the top to the bottom won't be closing anytime soon.

Awful advert for Asian football with Japan beating Philippines 7-0 in the QF, having registered 0 shots with only 15% possession. I can't remember them completing a single pass in the opposition half. South Korea v Japan will be a competitive semi-final at least, as will Australia v China.

110

David Wyatt-Hupton @davidwh.bsky.social · 13/03/2026

Working the Japan v Philippines game on Sunday in the QF of the AFC Women's Cup. Unfortunately i feel it's a big mismatch which will result in another lopsided victory, although not as bad as Japan beating India 11-0 in the group stage. I know teams need exposure to improve, but it's awful viewing.

000

David Wyatt-Hupton @davidwh.bsky.social · 12/03/2026

Yeah they have some really talented players. Bissoli is a danger but they're very susceptible defensively. I did think Melbourne would get past them but they won't be an easy out for anyone. I was surprised by how well Johor played.

100

David Wyatt-Hupton @davidwh.bsky.social · 12/03/2026

Pretty much spot on. Every now and then a Thai or Malaysian team will have a good run, but in terms of the east you expect the winner to come from the J-League or K-League.

100

David Wyatt-Hupton @davidwh.bsky.social · 12/03/2026

I guess they don't want to get too backlogged with the J1 league having this Vision tournament, then the World Cup, then going straight back into the league year. Just hand the title to Kobe now and move on 😂😜

100

David Wyatt-Hupton @davidwh.bsky.social · 12/03/2026

Yeah basically that whole West division is at a standstill and there is no way to know when it'll get going again.

100

David Wyatt-Hupton @davidwh.bsky.social · 12/03/2026

I don't mind it, but I think over an 8 game league phase the Japanese teams will end up dominating, just like they did this year finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd. I'm worried we may not be able to complete the AFC Champions League this season because of the issues in the middle east.

100

David Wyatt-Hupton @davidwh.bsky.social · 12/03/2026

Against Gala at home they should finish the job without too many issues. Let's not forget that Gala finished 20th in the league phase and have lost 5-6 away games in the Champions League this season. Even in Europa last season they were 0-5 away from home. Different team away from Turkey

000

David Wyatt-Hupton @davidwh.bsky.social · 11/03/2026

Really tough week for the EPL. Little bit of naivety in some of the way performances, looking at Man City and Chelsea. Arsenal are well positioned, and i still think Liverpool will do the job at home, but everyone else will struggle.

David Wyatt-Hupton @davidwh.bsky.social · 11/03/2026

Another three points for Norwich ➕3️⃣ Sheffield United scored and then decided to try and time waste for 70 minutes. Maghoma changed the game as he so often does. Great to see Pelle Mattson back, Forson too who scored the winner. If we can get healthy, we can beat anyone in this division. #NCFC

So we have the final four teams in the East region of the Asian Champions League: Vissel Kobe (Japan) Machida Zelvia (Japan) Buriram United (Thaland) Johor Darul Ta'zim (Malaysia) The West region hasn't started the R16 because of the troubles in the Middle East.

010

David Wyatt-Hupton @davidwh.bsky.social · 11/03/2026

For 77 minutes I thought this was going to be another Gwangju situation from last season. But when you need something big, turn to your best and most experienced players. Muto to Osako, Kobe end up winning 2-1 (3-1 AGG) and proceed to the next round of the Champions League! #VisselKobe

010

David Wyatt-Hupton @davidwh.bsky.social · 07/03/2026

What a strike this is from Matsumoto Yamaga's Fujieda Kosuke. It was the third and final goal of their comprehensive win over Sapporo (who continued to struggle, 0 wins in 5). Kosuke is only 22, joined Yamaga from Momoyama Gakuin University in January. Absolute 💥💥 of a right foot.

020

David Wyatt-Hupton @davidwh.bsky.social · 07/03/2026

😂😂 I don't think Norwich scouts know that Japan have a league considering we've never had a single Japanese player. So you're safe 😂

David Wyatt-Hupton @davidwh.bsky.social · 07/03/2026

FC Tokyo have been one of the more impressive teams in the vision league so far. Another win today, this time against Yokohama FM (3-0) and look at this assist from Kein Sato and finish by Motoki Nagakura. Scouts should be all over this young team, hope #NCFC are but I doubt it. #J1

Mito's Malick Fofana is shown a red card (deservedly so) for a foul in the box and instead of mouthing off with the referee, he comes back to shake his hand. Respect. Urawa missed the resulting penalty.

I'm not expecting to win away at Leeds on Sunday, especially with a depleted squad. But with Clement there is a chance, and that's all you want with an FA Cup 5th round tie away at a Premier League club. #NCFC

Here's today's TJW offering for 4/3/26 🟢 My thoughts on the Jets tagging Breece Hall. 🟢 Why he's smart to wait for his market to set. 🟢 Does Davis Mills make any sense for the Jets? 🟢 How about Malik Willis? 🟢 Loads of notes on mock drafts etc. #NYJ #NYJets jetsway.substack.com/p/jets-place...

Jets Place Franchise Tag on Breece Hall

Full list of final scores from the AFC Champions League R16 matches played today and yesterday. Melbourne City (AUS) 1:1 Buriram United (THA) Gangwon (ROK) 0:0 Machida Zelvia (JPN) FC Seoul (ROK) 0:1 Vissel Kobe (JPN) Johor Darul Ta'zim (MYS) 3:1 Sanfrecce Hiroshima (JPN) #ACLElite

000

David Wyatt-Hupton @davidwh.bsky.social · 04/03/2026

They'll get some time off to prepare for the home-leg a week today back in Japan. Sanfrecce went down 3-1 in their away leg against Malaysian side Johor Darul Ta'zim largely thanks to an early red-card by Hiroshima defender Kim Ju-sung. Machida drew 0-0 away to Gangwon & are favourites to progress.

000

David Wyatt-Hupton @davidwh.bsky.social · 04/03/2026

Vissel Kobe come back from South Korea with an important first-leg advantage. Brazilian CB Matheus Thuler with the only goal of the game although Maekawa did save a penalty in the second half after a harsh penalty for handball by 18-year-old CM Kento Hamasaki. Kobe not in J1 action this weekend.

David Wyatt-Hupton @davidwh.bsky.social · 04/03/2026

I'm glad the Jets decided to use the franchise tag on Breece Hall, it offers extra layers of protection that a transition tag doesn't. He'll want to see what Walker gets in FA and what Gibbs/Robinson get in contract extensions before signing a long-term deal. Hope he's a Jet for life. #NYJ

This is a strong strike from Matheus Jesus who now has 2 goals and 2 assists in 4 games with Nagasaki recording back-to-back victories. But Kosuke Nakamura (中村航輔) has to be getting a hand on that in goal. Kosuke is a capped international, this is very poor. #セレッソ大阪

I'm running our of superlatives for Phillipe Clement and what he's going at #NCFC. Injury ravaged squad and we've won 5 of our last 6 away games including a 2-0 win yesterday at Leicester and 9 wins from our last 11 including 2 clean sheet in a row. Absolutely mad when you think about it.

David Wyatt-Hupton @davidwh.bsky.social · 27/02/2026

Phillipe Clement basically blaming Liam Manning for the injuries: "No comparison to any of my other clubs (amount of injuries). We are digging into that. I don't want to go too deep into it, and I don't want to point the finger at people who are not here anymore." - Players weren't ready.

000

David Wyatt-Hupton @davidwh.bsky.social · 27/02/2026

Great win for Kyoto Sanga today who scored twice after 80 minutes to come from behind and take 3 points against Hiroshima. That puts Kyoto top of the west, leapfrogging Sanfrecce. Winning goal was scored by Brazilian Henrique Trevisan who arrived from FC Tokyo in the transfer window. #KyotoSanga

000

David Wyatt-Hupton @davidwh.bsky.social · 27/02/2026

Very good point David. The Attanasio's have pinpointed it as an issue. Some of the problems this year may be attributed to Manning's conditioning not preparing the players properly for the rigours of Championship football. Some may be that players brought in from Europe etc are not used to it.

000

David Wyatt-Hupton @davidwh.bsky.social · 27/02/2026

Kobe made that much harder than it needed to be, conceding this goal in the 90th minute, a great strike by Yu Hashimoto. We had numerous chances to put this game away in the 2nd half after going 2-0 up, but we squandered some good positions. Regardless, it's another 3 points. That's the key.

000

David Wyatt-Hupton @davidwh.bsky.social · 26/02/2026

100% That's the only priority. A late season charge to the playoffs was always unlikely, but it's near impossible with that injury list.

120

David Wyatt-Hupton @davidwh.bsky.social · 26/02/2026

Right now at Norwich we have 14 injuries to first-team players. 6-7 of those are starters or impact subs in a first-choice XI/squad. The fact we continue to pick up points is a minor miracle. I can't wait to see what Clement can do with a full squad next season. #NCFC

A lot of talk is about the top tier free agents on the market. If you’re lucky, you get one of them. But the real building of a team comes through the draft and by finding free agent steals. Here are five free agents that barely anyone is talking about. #NYJ jetsway.substack.com/p/5-free-age...
