This would be a total gamechanger! Yesterday, I took the call for a Mayoral visitor levy directly to the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves. Our work with York St John University has found that we could raise over £52m a year with a £2 charge on overnight stays in York and North Yorkshire.

At a time when Yorkshire Water customers are facing a 41% increase in bills alongside environmental failures and customer service shortcomings, the news that the Chief Executive has received additional payments is wholly unacceptable. As Yorkshire mayors, we have requested an urgent meeting.

Today on VE Day, we remember the courage and sacrifice of those who fought for peace and freedom. It marked the end of war in Europe, and the start of communities rebuilding with hope. It’s an incredible honour to represent our region at the National Service of Thanksgiving in Westminster Abbey.
