Love you. Love Lucy. Love your show. Most of all, I loved you talking with Tony. Please do not ever stop calling in to Miami.

I live in the red area outside Asheville. I see what you're seeing. But what I hear in the community spaces are the same sentiments. I fear that they've found some shame and are just receding from plain view.

This speaks to me about how lost we are as we move toward whatever post-capitalism look like. Our historical memory is not supporting our conremporary cultural development.

If being in a bubble means I get to choose what I take in for information instead of being spopon fed by an algorithm, then I'm in a bubble. I can still seek out other views on my own. It's called agency.

I've defended Obama's position and words in recent days, but your exclamation here is simply racist and wrong.
000
David S. Brown @davidsbrown.bsky.social · 07/05/2026
When taken with the other times Obama has mentioned this type of thing, I think it's informative to read this speech from another politician out of Illinois. It's about persuasion, and you can't speak to uneducated people in a language that they will reject before even listening.

I am working, so I don't have time for a granular search. But I would point to Sparnsbarger's SOTU response as an example of what Obama is advocating for. Instead of bombarding people with jargon, terms, and concepts discussed at the seminar table, she hammered the word "affordability." This!
000
David S. Brown @davidsbrown.bsky.social · 06/05/2026
I don't think you can defend that statement at all. How many examples do you require? I'm speaking about jargon here. That is the point.
000
David S. Brown @davidsbrown.bsky.social · 06/05/2026
You say that folks without college degrees thinking that Democratic politicians are belittling them is something that is nonexistant. I don't think you can really defend that, even though your intent is to attack Obama, and not defend them.
000
David S. Brown @davidsbrown.bsky.social · 06/05/2026
But to answer your question. I think instead of saying "gobbledygook," he could have used the word "jargon." Any of the phrases commonly used in the academy, or are on the cutting edge of social studies, are going to trigger these folks and they will shut their ears and hearts to the message.

Anecdotes won't move this forward. It's about the "how," of linguistics here, not the "what" necessarily. Folks without higher education, the ones not voting Democratic, are not persuaded by facts so much any longer. They traffick in feelings and rhetoric. I think he is speaking to persuasion.
110
David S. Brown @davidsbrown.bsky.social · 06/05/2026
I don't think it's inappropriate. I don't think he's talking about stump speeches and broadcasted statements here. I think he means when politicans are speaking to a voter, or those of us with experience in a seminar talk to our neighbors. It's about persuasion.
000
David S. Brown @davidsbrown.bsky.social · 06/05/2026
I don't see that. I think it's about recognizing your audience, the voters, and speaking their language to persuade them. That doesn't mean you use phrases like "death tax" to soothe them. It means keeping the language from being too pedantic so that people can be persuaded.

At the risk of doing the seminar thing, I encourage folks to read Lincoln's Temperance Address in 1842. He's making the same points. At least that was my takeaway.

David S. Brown @davidsbrown.bsky.social · 06/05/2026
He understands that politics is about persuasion, not simply about being right in an argument.

When people ask about our mac and cheese, and why it's like a golden brick of love instead of being creamy like the looser Kraft product, my wife rolls her eyes because she knows there's a homily coming about James Hemings and the Great Migration beginning right before World War II.
