This Bucks County Republican has cast many deplorable votes over his 7 terms. This might be one of the worst.

Have fun. Get the whole family involved when you can. Cub Scouts is more about family while Boy Scouts are about the individual. Happy to share things we did if you send me a msg.

Just core values. I also made sure all the ceremonies were special. We held our Pack meetings in the school cafeteria and for the Bobcat ceremony we turned down light and found a kid who could play a simple Native American beat and I was surprised at the buy in from kids and parents. Most of all 2/

I too became a Cub Scout leader and struggled in similar ways. As for religion we had den leaders interact with the parents and get them involved with Duty to God. As for nationalism we stressed human rights democracy and that we are all on the same team. Nothing to get any parents uptight. 1/

Live Freemans work. Know this piece. It’s a nice slice of life at the Hirschfeld’s. I wrote a piece for the Times on Al, Gould and Sarayon when the Gould movie came out. Freeman figures in that story too.

Hirschfeld told me when he and Dolly were driving back to NY after seeing the show premiere at the Bucks County Playhouse he asked her who wrote the score. They realized that is what the show needed. It would have also helped if the show did not open during a newspaper strike.

After VanDamm it was the norm. Tommy V did the images at the theater, and Florence V did stunning portraits at their studio at Carnegie Hall. They have a wild story. He took her name when they met and married in London after WWI.

It’s remarkable that photos of shows through the early 20s are literally “stage pictures” as these tableaux were staged for the photographer. Tommy VanDamm was I think to watch a show before shooting it to look for the interesting scenes to shoot. He starts in NYC around 1923.

She evidently was quite an actress.
Baclanova was born in Russia in the late 1800s and as a teenager was accepted into the Moscow Art Theatre (M.A.T), an invitation, according to some reports, that came Konstantin Stanislavski himself. She had significant roles in plays by Ibsen, Chekhov and Turgenev, and M.A.T productions of Shakespeare and Dickens. She also starred in Russian films, and by 1925 she was named a “Merited Artist of the Republic”, the highest Soviet artist honor.

After touring America in 1925 in a M.A.T. production of Lysistrata, she remained in America when the troupe returned home. She appeared on stage in southern California before soon finding work in Hollywood silent films. By 1928, Baclanova was at the height of her fame. She appeared in seven feature films (and two shorts) that year, including the now classic The Man Who Laughs. Judging by film stills, Ben may have used one from the 1928 film, The Docks of New York, as a visual reference for his portrait.

If Baclanova is known at all today, it is because in 1932 she starred as the scheming trapeze artist Cleopatra in Tod Browning’s unsettling film Freaks. Her film career began to slow after that, and while she did perform on Broadway, most notably in the hit Claudia in 1941 as Madame Daruschka (a role she would reprise in the film adaptation two years later), she would slowly disappear from the world of the performing arts. She died in Switzerland in 1974.

Studies have shown that on average people spend 18 seconds in front of an artwork in a museum and half that time is spent reading the label. I’ve told students for years that Bill Gates can’t get any more than they can if they simply spend time with a piece. Art rewards sustained engagement.

Kaparlik collage for MGM film of character from old west with kerchief around neck, checked shirt holding a candle in a bottle and gun in the other hand as he discovers treasure chest in basement with spider webs and mice. Dramatically lit. A hand with a sledge hammer is about to hit him on the head.
