You know what will cool you down during this heatwave? A book about #MCFC's win over Gillingham at Wembley in 1999. Get it for the bargain price of £7 (+p&p) here. If you order in the next couple of hours I can also get it into today's post: davemooney.co.uk/book/

I've discounted my #MCFC Wembley '99 book. I interviewed the entire team and the manager for it back in 2014 -- it's now down from £12.99 to £7 (+p&p) because I've got some left and need to make some room in the house. Would you like one? They're here: davemooney.co.uk/book/

As the World Cup approaches, a reminder of one of my all-time favourite things: For some reason, freshly-relegated Manchester City hosted Jamaica at Maine Road for a France ‘98 warm-up game. And the Independent’s match report was BRUTAL on a terrible 0-0 draw.
THERE was one question that could not go away as Jamaica met Manchester City last night: why on earth would a team going to the World Cup risk the humiliation of losing to a football disaster story?

Drawing against Wales in Cardiff two months ago was bad enough, but could you imagine lining up against Argentina or Croatia with a defeat at Maine Road despoiling a current form guide.Even Bury managed to avoid that and the closest they got to France this summer was when their manager, Stan Ternent, got an engaged tone when he phoned the World Cup ticket hot-line.

Give a country the scent of the finals, however, and rationale goes out of the window, as England's World Cup single testifies. The Reggae Boyz need match practice and the Cock-up Boys provided it last night, which if nothing else had the horns and whistles of the Caribbean pitted against the dropped clangers of Moss Side.Jamaica managed to avoid the ultimate in red faces but they did little else to encourage the belief that they will do anything but make up the numbers in France. A turgid 0-0 draw is not the stuff to draw inspiration from.

This was the first match since City sank into the Second Division and the much-billed chance to say goodbye to Georgi Kinkladze proved to be false promise because the Georgian was in Amsterdam negotiating a transfer to Ajax. In normal circumstances the fans would have every right to feel short-changed, but then they are used to that at Maine Road.Other than Kinkladze, Joe Royle, who signed a new three-year contract that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2001, had kept his promise and fielded a near full-strength side. In other words, a collection that any self- respecting World Cup team ought to wallop.

Instead all they offered was a chance for Nicky Weaver to impress Royle with his goalkeeping. The 18-year-old made good saves from Paul Hall, Ricardo Gardner and Stephen Malcolm, but to suggest he prevented a rout would be a gross over-statement. This was a pallid Jamaican display.

If I'm being perfectly honest, Marc Guehi is a brilliant signing for City on a football basis. However, the explanation he gave for writing "I <3 Jesus" on the rainbow armband left a lot to be desired.
"The message was just a message of truth and love and incluvsivity to be honest," said Guehi without expanding on the point further to explain specifically what he meant.

But he added: "I don't think the message was harmful in any way - that's all I can really say about that to be honest."

"I believe 100% in the words that I wrote, even what I've just said now - it's a message of truth and love, and I hope people can understand that my faith is my faith, and I'll stand by it for the rest of my life," he said.

I noticed that the game on Saturday finished with the same scoreline as the date... City 10-1 Exeter on the 10th of January. So I had a look through City's history to see when it had happened before and there are only 18 times in total:
A list that reads:

01 Jan 1904 - City 1-1 Middlesbrough
02 Jan 1922 - City 2-1 Huddersfield
02 Feb 1924 - City 2-2 Halifax
02 Apr 1926 - City 2-4 Birmingham
01 Feb 1936 - Portsmouth 1-2 City
02 Jan 1954 - City 2-1 Sunderland
01 Jan 1985 - Leeds 1-1 City
01 Jan 1987 - Watford 1-1 City
01 Jan 1992 - Chelsea 1-1 City
02 May 1992 - Oldham 2-5 City
01 Mar 1997 - Bradford 1-3 City
01 Jan 2001 - City 1-1 Coventry
01 Feb 2003 - City 1-2 WBA
02 Feb 2011 - Birmingham 2-2 City
02 Jan 2017 - City 2-1 Burnley
04 Jan 2020 - City 4-1 Port Vale
04 Jan 2025 - City 4-1 West Ham
10 Jan 2026 - City 10-1 Exeter

Maybe this is a HOT TAKE, but these films are far more watchable and enjoyable than the three sequels. The sequels might have better dialogue and acting, but the overall story, the structure and the emotion just isn't there. Everything has a purpose in the prequels and adds to the Star Wars story.
Owen and Baru Lars stand at their homestead on Tatooine, holding the baby Luke Skywalker, as the planet's two suns set in the distance at the end of Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.
370
David Mooney @davidmooney.co.uk · 27/04/2025
The structure of the films works really well to drive towards the story that we know is coming. You really feel for the good guys, how they've been manipulated, and you understand every character's motivations and actions. All their decisions have consequences and there's genuine sadness at the end.
Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader look at the early framework for the Death Star from a Star Destroyer, at the end of Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.
150
David Mooney @davidmooney.co.uk · 27/04/2025
There's a lot of focus on what doesn't work in this trilogy, but I think a lot should be made of what does work. The emotion is there. The characters are perhaps wooden (as the actors battle with terrible dialogue, CGI co-stars, and takes being edited without chemistry), but you FEEL the situations.
Obi-Wan Kenobi and Padme Amidala speak in Padme's apartment, as Obi-Wan searches for information about the whereabouts of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader in Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.
140
David Mooney @davidmooney.co.uk · 27/04/2025
The weird thing is, the advancements in the technology of the time probably don't help these films. The CGI becomes less believable as we go on. The speeders move more like cartoons and the droids get floppier and less "metal". The CGI sets just don't have the same feel as when on location.
Obi-Wan Kenobi walks along a corridor on Kamino, followed by two Kaminoan officials, inspecting the cloning facility in Star Wars: Episode II: Attack of the Clones.
130
David Mooney @davidmooney.co.uk · 27/04/2025
It lacks subtlety in a lot of places and too often the characters stand around and explain the plot to each other instead of it actually happening, but that's the core issue with all three of these films. The story is great, the execution of the story is lacking.
Padme Amidala and Anakin Skywalker stand on the balcony overlooking the lake on Naboo, from Star Wars: Episode II: Attack of the Clones.
130
David Mooney @davidmooney.co.uk · 27/04/2025
Strangely, it's the first time I've ever watched all three films in quick succession and doing it that way makes everything feel more cohesive. You see how the galaxy slowly slides into darkness and how key players manipulate events.
Darth Maul holds out his ignited double-bladed lightsaber in the hangar on Naboo from Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace.
