This is light escapism about the heroics of science nerds from start to finish, padded with lots of mismatched-buddy comedy. Which is fine, if that’s what you like! Dial your brain to FUN, unplug, and enjoy. (3/3)

My one complaint? You’ve got alien species, near-light speed travel, mind-boggling science, global cataclysm, and utterly non-terrestrial technology — and the film never pauses to consider the deeper implications of any of it. (2/3)

I finally saw PROJECT HAIL MARY last night. Thoroughly entertaining, well paced, great cinematography, and a tremendous job on the part of Ryan Gosling holding the whole thing together alone on screen for 80% of the movie. (1/3) #ProjectHailMary

So if you’re interested, don’t read a synopsis, don’t see a trailer, don’t read a review, just go in cold. It’s not one of Pixar’s absolute best — a little too scattered for that, and the typical heartwarming takes a back seat to the chaotic energy. Still? A very, very fun time at the movies. (2/2)

Pixar’s latest, #HOPPERS, is bananas. It’s incredibly funny, it’s got a manic pace, and you never quite know where it’s going to go next. I really knew very little about the film going in, but I think it would have been even better if I had known absolutely nothing. (1/2)

Trump will have to start turning down the temperature eventually. (After escalating some more, of course.) It’s the only way to avoid a total Republican wipeout in the midterms. I’m hopeful that we can thread the needle such that THAT is the only massacre that happens before all this is over. (7/7)

I wonder what would happen if tens of thousands of people stopped withholding federal taxes from their paychecks and started transferring money out of the US. Anyone interested? (6/7)

I’m talking about a constant blockade of the streets around the White House. I’m talking about soldiers deserting their posts. What would happen if a chunk of the Secret Service stayed home one day? What would happen if we shut the airports down? What about public transportation or the roads? (5/7)

The next step, I believe, is economic. We need to shut this country down. I’m talking about coordinated strikes and protests in every city. I’m talking about no more trucks delivering goods. I’m talking about every government worker walking out of the job. (4/7)

I still do not believe violence is the solution. Imagine the calamity that would ensue if a group got together and started shooting ICE officers in the streets. Please, no guns! Tim Walz’ insistence on peaceful resistance may be the only thing standing between us and complete martial law. (3/7)

If there is anyone still supporting Trump or the MAGA movement left here, please fuck all the way off. Whatever excuses you had at one point are gone. You are either immune to reason, evidence, and common sense, or you’re just a shitty person. I’ll be happy to tell you which if you don’t know. (2/7)

After the blatant murders of Renee Good and Alex Pretti by government agents — both captured by multiple cameras and both immediately lied about by the administration — the time for dialogue with these people is over. (1/7)

I’m proud to be a Virginian today. This used to be the hallmark of the United States. We pretty much INVENTED this in the modern world. Here’s hoping that the federal government can get back to this standard as well. (4/4)

Spanberger is blatantly reversing some of Youngkin’s policies, as Youngkin did before her. And yet here they both are, smiling and seemingly meaning it. (3/4)

Gov. Abigail Spanberger and now-former Gov. Glenn Youngkin couldn’t be less alike. Youngkin had full Republican control of Virginia, and he governed as a Christian conservative. Now his successor will have complete Democratic control of the state with a center-left agenda. (2/4)

It’s angry at right-wing online bullshit but doesn’t play like a liberal screed. This isn’t an easy juggling act, but somehow WAKE UP DEAD MAN pulls it off. (6/6)

Most interesting to me is how Johnson’s script manages to both skewer phony, reactionary Instagram Christians and respect old-fashioned Christian faith, while having a good amount of genuine laughs and some macabre touches at the same time. (5/6)

The mystery is fiendishly twisty (you won’t guess most of it — you’re not given enough information). All of the supporting players have their moments, though Jeremy Renner isn’t quite up to his usual standards. Glenn Close and Josh Brolin are especially good. (4/6)

WAKE UP’s star (besides Daniel Craig, perfect as always) is Josh O’Connor, who carries most of the film with his tortured Catholic priest. It might be the best acting job in the entire series thus far. (3/6)

Consistency like Rian Johnson’s in his KNIVES OUT films is hard to to come by. I’m having a hard time thinking of any trilogy where all three films are legitimately as good as each other. But with WAKE UP DEAD MAN, Johnson’s done it. (1/6) #WakeUpDeadMan #KnivesOut #RianJohnson

The first time I’ve taken a deep breath in months. Congratulations to Virginia, New Jersey, California, Pennsylvania, and everywhere else that Democrats surged yesterday. (One of those #Spanberger votes in VA was mine!) Hell, Democrats flipped two state Senate seats in frickin’ MISSISSIPPI.

Jimmy Wales, founder of #Wikipedia: “We’re designing everything for the long haul, and the only way we can last that long is not by pandering to this raging mob…but maintaining our values, maintaining our trustworthiness. We’re just going to do our thing, and we’re going to do it as well as we can.”

And then — hopefully with the help of a Democratic House and Senate — the next president can go about the hard work of fixing the country using the law. Eliminating gerrymandering once and for all. Getting rid of Citizens United. Making DC and Puerto Rico full states. (5/7)

This could all be accomplished by 5 pm the first day. That’s the pitfall of governing by executive fiat. Anything that’s not enshrined in the Constitution or voted into law by the legislature can simply just… go away with the next executive fiat. (4/7)

I’ve had an epiphany. Almost every horrible thing Donald #Trump has done to this country thus far has been accomplished via executive order. This means the next president can simply reverse most of it, like Thanos, with a snap of his or her fingers. (1/7)

assassination of several hundred journalists, academics, and diplomats, an uncountable number of war crimes and violations of Geneva conventions, and backroom deals to enrich Trump and his pals. If that’s not worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize, what is? #TrumpNobelPeacePrize (2/2)

Charlie Kirk was a toxic shithead. Doesn’t mean he deserved to get shot in a public forum. The whole thing — everything that the US has become, thanks to MAGA — just makes me sad and depressed. And Kirk’s death will only enrage the Nazis all the more. How about no more killing? #CharlieKirk

If there’s one reason to see FANTASTIC FOUR, it’s the Jetsons-style 1960s vibe. All that faux Atomic Age architecture, neon color, and retro fashion is like popcorn for the soul. Just maybe don’t do like I did and pay $27 a pop to see it in IMAX. (4/4)

Also — here’s a phrase I never thought I’d type — Pedro Pascal is TERRIBLE. He’s mumbly, morose and namby-pamby that he nearly drags the whole movie down with him. I wish that Marvel had kept the John Krasinski casting from DR. STRANGE, because this film could have used a burst of charisma. (3/4)

The film isn’t bad, per se. It’s just not particularly interesting. Our villain Galactus is properly menacing, the Silver Surfer is done well, and the third act battle engaging. But the effects are not top-tier, the plot is full of holes, and the emotional beats feel perfunctory and unearned. (2/4)

I saw #FANTASTICFOUR: FIRST STEPS last night. The theater was surprisingly three-quarters full for a random Tuesday night, but unlike the SUPERMAN screening I attended, surprisingly quiet. No laughter, no cheering, no applause. (1/4)

As for the “woke” aspects of the film that has the Right losing what little remains of its mind? Forget it. There’s nothing remotely controversial or even left-wing about the movie at all. (7/7)

Still, the casting is terrific. #DavidCorenswet has an infectious optimism about him that puts him very close stylistically to Christopher Reeve. Rachel Brosnahan makes a perfect Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult is quite dastardly as Lex Luthor, and Nathan Fillion’s Green Lantern is a hoot. (6/7)

This might actually be the most pedestrian film James Gunn has done yet. It’s visually undistinguished — there’s precious little of the trippy psychedelia from GUARDIANS — and the only good orchestral music is cribbed directly from John Williams. (4/7)

In fact, it’s exactly like those far better movies with the blood toned down. There’s ass-kicking set to pop music, Superman says “dude” a lot, and there’s an adorable superdog that steals every scene Nathan Fillion isn’t in. (3/7)

#SUPERMAN is colorful, overstuffed, and funny. It’s entertaining. But you know what? If this is the much-ballyhooed new direction for DC superhero flicks, then they’re in serious trouble. (1/7)

A fabulous piece of art I discovered from the Swedish illustrated edition of #TheHobbit. That’s Bilbo confronting Gollum, believe it or not, by #ToveJansson. Apparently this illustration caused #JRRTolkien to amend the book, because he never clarified how big Gollum was in the first edition.
