Westerns regularly have incorrect clothing, guns, saddles, sets, etc, but Michael Parks' modern straw hat with a plastic string adjuster in Django Unchained was particularly egregious to me (the rest of his outfit is also all wrong & John Jarratt seems to be wearing a T-shirt).

The script also had everyone calling their rifles "Winchesters", though it was changed to "rifles" in the actual film. The costumes are also absurdly wrong for the period, the most egregious example being Michael Parks' hat with a plastic string adjuster

Here's Buster Keaton's best guess as to why this scene from The Frozen North so angered William S. Hart (it's not because of the double murder)

Only 2 of Riddle Gawne's 5 reels survive at the Library of Congress. The film was too gritty for 1918 Chicago, where it was censored for showing William S. Hart shoot a man in the back, multiple allusions to prostitution, and, worst of all, depicting a woman at a bar...

When I first posted this, I got overzealous & linked to my 🧵 about the history of the phrase "bust a cap" & its usage in True Grit, without posting the excerpts in this 🧵 Anyway, here's Ned Pepper saying, "bust a cap" in True Grit & Hardin writing, "burst a cap" in his autobiography

021

Westerns & the Old West @davidlambertart.bsky.social · 01/10/2026

Of course, True Grit's climactic reins-biting gunfight is identical to an illustration of a shootout w/ vaqueros in Hardin's book, though he never says he bit the reins. There was a myth that Bushwhackers like Cogburn did this in the Civil War, but Frank James himself denied it

Westerns & the Old West @davidlambertart.bsky.social · 01/10/2026

Can't believe I forgot about True Grit's "hooraw" conversation between LaBoeuf & Cogburn, which might've found its origin in John Wesley Hardin's account of Wild Bill Hickok warning Hardin against trying to "hurrah" him.
