And it should go without saying that, were I still doing Strobist.com, I would: • Buy a 6-set, in black 20w • Hardwire them with individual AC plugs • DIY 5/8” stand-mounts for them Bc that’s a kickass, 1940s Hollywood-style portrait setup, in a bag, on the cheap.

The ONLY thing they’re missing, which would be a pie-in-the-sky ask, is a clip-on slot for gels. This, assuming a dimmer master circuit, would allow for relative brightness and color tweaks. And that’s an easy, 3-D print add-on. I am unreasonably happy right now.

Been looking for wall/art lighting for my basement redesign, and stumbled upon these: 10w or 20w CRI90+ LED, switchable K-temps, 15-60 degree zoom heads, AND fresnel fronts. 😍 All on common, type-H rails. $139 for 6. Could not be happier. amzn.to/3VhsSJt

Seen on Rednote: a render of what someone in China is suggesting that Nikon should make. Honestly, I think a mirrorless Nikon Z body that paid homage to the original S2/S3 series would absolutely kill. (📷: 玩物有智的爽司, via Rednote)

If your vintage camera is missing a hood—or maybe you just don’t like the current plastic tulip hoods—you can buy a metal version for a song on AliExpress. Right diameter, right focal length. This one was $6.85, shipped. a.aliexpress.com/_mL7pdqj

Of note: Merry-go-round of life, and il porco rosso. I walked all over Shanghai to that soundtrack, in March.

100% endorse, and a great travel hack. I keep a playlist on my Spotify with lots of cinematic pieces just for times like this. It’s like a ✨see the magic✨ filter for your mind when you’re walking around. (Especially, with a camera.) #1 easy gateway into this vibe: Joe Hisaishi.

Very thankful to not be driving a big diesel truck right now. 🛵

Those are so nice. Just check reviews to make sure the LEDs and driver aren’t prone to early failure.

That’s the best part: You can adjust them until you get the look you want. But then, you’re also talking to the guy who wrapped his 2700k LED range top bulbs in 10CCs of magenta gel, to mute the green spike. So there’s that.

(And, for those wondering how you can get below 2700 K as in the example above: A normal 2700K bulb diffused with rice paper will get you there.) You want it even warmer? Mist the rice paper with coffee when you are designing your lampshade/diffuser. (5/x)

For anyone wanting to play with their new control capabilities along the Kelvin spectrum with their interior lighting, here’s a quick explainer video, via Rednote: (4/x)

As in most things, China is light years (heh) ahead of the rest of the world in terms of their lighting sophistication. This is true both in physical/creative lighting design and in color theory. (3/x)

Home Depot has just done something that might make me swap nearly every LED lightbulb in my home: They have redesigned their house brand “EcoSmart” LED bulbs so you can now dial in the Kelvin color temperature. They did it to reduce SKUs. But we get the main benefit. (2/x)

Strobist’s main theme was that it is worth taking the time to intentionally design the lighting in your photographs. And if this is true for your photos, it’s doubly true for your home: Think once, enjoy forever. (1/x) strobist.blogspot.com/2015/12/remo...
