Please join me and these three terrific poets next Tuesday, August 4, at 6 PM at Bryant Park, in the outdoor reading room along West 42nd Street. The brilliant Jason Schneiderman is our host. It's going to be a wonderful evening.

Le Moulin à Nef residency, in Auvillar, France. My studio is in the front, with the green shutters. I look out on to the River Garonne & its bridge & fragrant riverbank, which has already led to a poem about sensory overwhelm. My thanks to the VCCA people who make this place possible.

Trying to remember my French before I leave on Sunday for my residency at Le Moulin à Nef, so I don't accidentally board a train to Vladivostok.

Last night at a faculty reading for Poetry by the Sea, I read new poems, including two that celebrate the Manhattan Bridge. Sorry/not sorry, Hart Crane.

Zohran Mamdani celebrates the life and legacy of trans activist Sylvia Rivera--and vows to support trans people in New York and combat Donald Trump's "scorched earth campaign" against them. See the first comment for the full, two-minute video, shot in Christopher Park.

Today I have completed 6,575 consecutive days of aerobic exercise. Eighteen years. ____ Illustration: Pheidippides giving word of the Greek victory over Persia at the Battle of Marathon to the people of Athens, having run the whole way, by Luc-Olivier Merson. Pheidippides promptly dropped dead.

A hugely heartening march of thousands upon thousands in Manhattan, one of thousands of protests nationwide. Clay carried this sign for four hours. This good trouble will build and build. #handsoff

I know Trump's terrible and tragic tariffs will bring trouble and turmoil to people the world over--but today, please, please, ponder the plight of the penguins on Heard Island.

"HERE AND NOW, NEAR AND FAR, WE DON'T WANT YOUR SWASITKAR!" I'm so glad that, today at the protest again Elon Musk at Tesla in the Meatpacking District, I got the entire crowd shouting my chant! I feel like I just got published in The New Yorker.

"Fair or Not, Zelensky Is Angering Trump. Is His Style Hurting Ukraine?" So this is how the New York Times marks the third anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Once again it normalizes Trump and set up a situation in dominationist terms. Infuriating.

My grandfather, the Rev. Addison Hershey Groff, D.D., who died on a cold February 7 when I was 9 years old, wrote this prayer, "Disturb Us, O Lord." In my boyhood it was framed in his and my grandmother's house, along with all the family photo portraits. I studied it until I had it memorized.

This Wednesday was the semester’s last poetry workshop with my CCNY MFAers. The world beyond the workshop menaced us, but it was startling and thrilling to find ourselves so pure in our attention. I thought often of Marie Ponsot’s Zenlike postulate, “The poet’s only responsibility is to the poem.”

Poetry-loving friends, please consider joining my Zoom class, as we explore and practice the afterpoem: a poem that reacts to a poem by another poet. We'llcome up with poems that aren't imitations but independent, interactive artworks that send up sparks. A signup link is in the photo.
