New paper out in @methodsinecoevol.bsky.social! 📷We present TropiCam-AI: a machine learning model that identifies 84 taxa of Neotropical arboreal mammals and birds from camera-trap images and videos. 🐒🦜 📃Paper → doi.org/10.1111/2041-210x.70213 🌐Project → github.com/andrewzamp/TropiCam-AI
An arboreal camera-trap image form the Brazilian Amazon rainforest. An animal is detected by TropiCam-AI, which analyzes its features and tries to determine what species it is.TropiCam-AI analyzes the prompted image, and classifies it at the species level as a black spider monkey. Users can decide to let the model predict at the taxonomic level that achieves the highes confidence and accuracy, or force predictions at the desired taxonomic level.

I never got used to Rome, apparently neither did some birds! In our last work, we investigated how anthropogenic and environmental gradients shape avian assemblages with different tolerance to urbanization in Rome. Link: doi.org/10.1007/s109... #Ornithology #UrbanEcology #Ecology #Biodiversity 🌐

The BirdCast forecast map shows migration is very active tonight along the Mississippi and Atlantic Flyways. How? BirdCast analyzes data from weather radars to separate bird migration from other activity: non-biological (rain, hurricanes, etc.) and other biological (bats, insects).
The map shows the forecast for bird migration on the night of September 12, 2025. Note that activity is highest along the Mississippi and Atlantic Flyways and that the birds are avoiding the storms along the Central Flyway.

Bird migration forecasts show predicted nocturnal migration 3 hours after local sunset and are updated every 6 hours. These forecasts come from models trained on the last 23 years of bird movements in the atmosphere as detected by the US NEXRAD weather surveillance radar network. In these models we use the Global Forecasting System (GFS) to predict suitable conditions for migration occurring three hours after local sunset. These maps also show precipitation forecasts (outlined and shown in grayscale). Note, areas forecast to experience precipitation and bird migration may overlap, and predictions for migration intensity may be highly variable in these locations.

Colorado State University and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology currently produce these forecasts. Leon Levy Foundation, Edward W. Rose Postdoctoral Fellowship, and the Marshall Aid Commemoration Commission supported this research, with additional support from University of Massachusetts Amherst and University of Oklahoma. The BirdCast project was created with grant awards from the National Science Foundation and subsequently supported by awards from Leon Levy Foundation.

Yeah, we get it—humans stress out wildlife 🐾. But how much? Do they find us insufferable equally? Not quite! Our meta-analysis explores how taxa, species traits, and disturbance type shape terrestrial vertebrates' glucocorticoid responses to human disturbance. Check it out! doi.org/10.1111/1365...

Real nice paper estimating density of rainforest animals w camera traps & comparing w secr & line transects. Great job thinking through all the details of these models. Community density estimates possible w cams but need >25 detections for decent precision link.springer.com/article/10.1...
