My wife took this picture of our then five year old child, nine years ago today, and it's always going to hold a special place in the family photo album!

I'm having a big clearout and found this old Samsung NC10 which not only powers up but even retains charge! I'm not sure what to do with it. Sell it to a mad enthusiast or give it to a tech museum? It's kind of cool in a way.

Worst train toilet ever. Tiny hole to use, but at least there's a solid handle to keep you steady. No hand rinse either. Avanti needs to get their act together.
Terrible toilet on Avanti train. Honestly should just be turned into a bike storage or something.

Gemini Q&A:

Hi. I'm a multi-billionaire. I migrated to Monaco because Britain taxes too much. Should I go on TV to say the country is on the slide and everyone will leave if taxes don't come down? Short answer please.

Gemini answered:

No, you shouldn't. Broadcasting warnings about national decline while living in a tax haven almost guarantees intense public backlash rather than policy reform. To ordinary voters and lawmakers, a broadcast from Monte Carlo reads less like sound economic advice and more like a threat from an out-of-touch elite, which usually hardens political resolve against tax cuts.
If your goal is to genuinely influence UK fiscal policy, quiet lobbying or supporting economic policy research carries far more weight than a high-profile media tour.
What specific outcome are you hoping to achieve—shifting public sentiment or directly influencing lawmakers?

I'm travelling to Italy to get an interview with two masters of car design. Who aren't Italian or working for an Italian firm.

Of course my connection has been cancelled. Northern has to be one of the most shockingly unreliable services in the country. I'd say the majority of my attempts to travel by train are impacted in some way that just adds anxiety. Thankfully there's another train fifteen minutes later.

Got to love this coffee shop that spotted an opportunity to sell to travellers over a low fence.

Not at all convinced the world needs a Defender like this. It's a road car. For people who want to bask in second-hand toughness, but ultimately, it's fast, bad for pedestrians, and I completely 100% understand why JLR would build this for the kind of people who want it.
The Land Rover Defender Dakar special edition, because what you really need on the school run is a 4.4l turbocharged V8 with 635PS and massive wheels. It's a toughed out, wheel arch extended version of the Defender in a sand colour with a green roof and roof lights for lighting up everything ahead of you because that's important when you're nipping to the golf club.

Tip: if you only finger tighten the sprocket bolts, the chain falls off. No harm done, thankfully. Subscribe to Karting for Absolute Idiots for more hot tips 🤦

Because of an injured muscle in my arse, the usual belts I use are too stiff and could set it off again. So I shopped around and discovered golfing belts. Holy cow! Comfort-tastic! I feel like I've been missing out all these years! I suspect they're a bit "unc".

An accidental renaissance scene of a cultural evening in Manchester. A gentleman is discussing his recent actions with two police officers whilst a woman nearby scolds him. Or the police. Nearby a middle aged man lies magnificently in the road, his belly showing, and one arm reaches for a beer.

I have to say that my old Volvo V70 is a very well designed car. It's not just about looks, but things like the split cargo net and folding front passenger seat so I can bring home an enormously long box from IKEA. Even stuff like changing lightbulbs is so easy compared to most cars.

It's a weird realisation that I can feed my family more cheaply and with better quality food at a furniture shop than at a burger chain. Something is wrong somewhere.

I think AI is wonderful, but in looking for images of David Hockney for our obituary, I found stuff like this. I totally understand why many artists are grumpy and see it as little more than a plagiarism machine. I get that - stuff like this just encourages it. I sense an article...

You can also specifically state that something is for bots and it'll parse but I've yet to find a way to convince them to not state I left it for bots. If you ask about me you get this.

You had many types. The ultra stylish. Like this chap who was working but still made time for me to take a snap. Sadly I didn't catch his name. What I didn't see was anyone narcissistic. Yes, they performed, but the care for others from everyone I met was palpable.

I went with @skodauk.bsky.social to the Ooooh that's Epiq art installation and event in Milan. I've never worked alongside influencers before. Our little group from the UK had just three guests with one being Emily-Rose Holman. I met and talked with quite a few others too. It was interesting.
Emily-Rose Holman wearing a suede jacket over a striped top, in dark glasses, sketching the Škoda Epiq on art paper in A Milanese courtyard.Ricardo Orts of Ulises Studio explaining on stage his playdough concept for the Ooooh that's Epiq installation in Milan, alongside a camouflaged Epiq and one seemingly made from playdough in multiple colours. The leadership team of Škoda's event, including marketing lead Martin Jahn and chief designer Oliver Stefani sitting on a stage in front of a DJ in bright green, behind a Škoda music desk. The scene was taken at the end of the evening and it looks as if people are taking a rest after a long evening.

Bit of vibe coding in Python to help visualise data from my son's karting data logger but also to help us make setup decisions after a first practice. Quite chuffed with the results, really. I don't think vibe coding let's non experts build complex software products. But tools like this? Sure.

Finally got around to it - the social share buttons on @designweek.co.uk no longer include X and Bluesky has been swapped in. We had half a million followers in the heyday of Twitter but engagement had disappeared because the algorithm switched to promoting fascism instead, and we don't do that.
A screenshot from Design Week on an article about PAC-MAN World 2 Re-PAC and the refresh of the game's silhouettes by Fluid. A small part of a PAC-MAN postcard is visible. The old X social share link is gone and has been replace by a butterfly icon linking to Bluesky.

I'm not quite sure I get full on Web Brutalism. It's been around a while now but... I mean, Design Week actually took on some elements of it in its design, but we had to keep it sensible because usability and accessibility matter. What are your thoughts on the trend?

I genuinely feel that we in the software world could learn from the music hardware world. Buttons and lights that stay in the same place are UX/UI heaven. Muscle memory is one of the most robust systems we have in our biology.

One of the joys of Bluesky is that my family is entirely unaware of its existence. Currently happily cleaning up an effects pedal and looper that will make my youngest very happy. Got it used, but still has the protective film on the cover, the bag in the box... it's come up like new.

I did a quick bit of Photoshop to show what a darker coloured Jaguar Type 00 might look like. I doubt one will ever exist in a colour like this, but who knows what colours the production car will carry?

Design isn't the only industry where people take out context and apply dubious takes. When you supply plane parts, every item has to be checked and tested carefully and you need an unbroken chain of paperwork from the metals supplied through to delivery for each item. So parts are costly.

You can see the progression in my 3d printing experiments. These hooks are dead handy as they attach to any desk or worktop so long as there's enough space, but getting the strength right matters. Using a gyroid infill and 1.2mm shell gives a nicer finish and much greater strength than grid + 0.8mm.
