Agreed, wtf? Been reading TPM for 23 years and this seems uncalled for. And the “clickbait” remark was about the original article’s headline.

Very cool! And much appreciation to NYRB for republishing The Stone Face. I brought that book up with a friend recently when we were discussing Black expats in mid-20th century Paris.

With a low and smoky voice, she conjured the blues tradition of her native Mississippi in both her own songs and in covers.

I think it’s possible and even necessary to both fight fascism at home and a genocide that’s being carried out by a U.S. ally in Gaza and the West Bank with active U.S. support. (See Olmert’s statements on Gaza/WB) Not a disconnect there, esp given Likud’s own long-term slide into fascism.

Also wondering why Chevalier has “no business being in Congress.” Not in NYC & know little about her. Ecstatic to see the Mamdani slate do so well. Will the Dem establishment finally wake up & smell the DSA coffee? Yes it’s NYC, but look how well Platner is doing in Maine w/a similar message.

I’ve heard this before. Platner is way smarter than Trump, & Trump was well-established as a con man long before he ran for office. I’d also submit that the R and D bases are very different in how they evaluate candidates. (See Paxton, Ken) I always vote blue, but done supporting geriatric centrism.

There are plenty of faux populists on the R side who've jumped on that bandwagon (& some on the D side) & sound completely phony in their rhetoric. Platner sounds like he's speaking from the heart to me. He's certainly not kissing corporate a*s like Dems have for so long. Respect to your POV.

Saxophonist Sonny Rollins was on a hot streak in the mid-to-late 1950s. Last week's Night Lights show highlights his 1957 chapter, including a brief stint with Miles Davis, Rollins' historic live Village Vanguard date, and music from albums such as Way Out West & The Sound of Sonny.

Rollins '57: Sonny Rollins Takes The Lead
In 1957 tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins was at the peak of his first great period, playing with a confident, swinging, and radical abandon both as a leader and with Max Roach and Miles Davis.

I don't live in Maine, but I've watched plenty of his campaign clips on Instagram, & he's one of the strongest & most direct communicators the Dems have had in years. Unless it's an Oscar-worthy act, he's connecting with voters about our f'd up state of affairs in a genuine way. I think he means it.

Big credit to Mamdani for the city’s vibe of late. Great to see all of the doomsayers (including way too many establishment Dems) have to seethe through his inspiring and successful governance.

I always rec Josh as *the* go-to writer for politics, but have lately added Oliver Kornetzke, who's doing the best slam-dunk commentary around on just how clueless the Dem establishment remains & its collusion in what's happened to this country in recent decades. He's written a lot about Platner.

Intellectual honesty
The reality of Graham Platner is probably somewhere between the most scandalous version being aggressively pushed right now and something considerably less damning than the headlines suggest.

Best political leader in America right now by a mile. And while he can't run for president, he's sure showing Democrats not just how to win elections, but how to grow the inspiration of a campaign into a proactive & effective governance that delivers results & fulfills hopes. Also, LKG!!!

The base is more than Black women. And as a newly-minted senior myself, I’m not out to demean my peers. But I think my point is valid. I mean, read this story about the Plantner-Mills race itself. Dem voters are mad at the party, and it’s affecting the primary. www.nbcnews.com/politics/202...

I get that too, and am very pragmatic about running (and voting for) electable candidates. But that anger IMO accounts for part of why Maine D’s and independents may be favorably inclined towards Plantner.
110
David Brent Johnson @davidbrentjohnson.bsky.social · 09/04/2026
I get & agree with all of this, but I think you also have to factor in just how angry the base is with Schumer/Jeffries and the geriatric-centrist Dem establishment, which Mills also represents. That’s a big reason for why overall Democratic approval has been so low—very unhappy base voters.

Um, the point of Youngman’s repost of your tweet remains the same. You evidently approve of highlighting AOC’s “word salad” quote while the NYT continues to sanewash our demented president, who spouts far worse “word salads” all the time. Highlighting that quote proves Youngman’s point in general.
