Yesterday's news about Jacob Geller broke my heart, so much that I couldn't stop dwelling on it all day. In an effort to make sense of this horrific news and my admittedly complicated feelings about it, here is my article on the Jacob Geller situation: epiloguegaming.com/what-do-we-d...

What Do We Do With Jacob Geller? - Epilogue Gaming
Earlier this week, a friend noticed Jacob Geller’s book, How A Game Lives, sitting amongst my living room shelves. Under almost any other circumstances, this would have been an exciting invitation for...

I recommend using the memmap2 crate. All you should have to do is make an Mmap and call rkyv::access on it. The util crate (not stable) has some examples of how to use Mmap: github.com/rkyv/rkyv_util

This tool gives me a solid grasp on what my cost-of-living is, how it's changing over time, and how it relates to my income and savings. With this information, I feel much less worried about the future because I can save appropriately and understand what I need to survive. Maybe it can help you too!

I have open-sourced my financial report generator: github.com/djkoloski/fi... I use this to understand and track my finances over time. I tend to live within my means, avoiding debt and minimizing lifestyle creep. But just living by solid principles doesn't put you in control of your finances.

It would be cool to make the speed/size tradeoff explicit and more fine-grained. You could even push that decision to the binary level so different binaries could make different tradeoffs with the same schema.

I’m doing yardwork today and so have been idly thinking “what if you could mix dynamic and static schemas in the same binary?”. I like the idea of optimizing hot paths with statically compiled ser/de, and optimizing code size with dynamic schema ser/de.

I’m an external schema believer. And unfortunately the easiest external schema to make is usually source code for decoding 😞

The latest rkyv release fixes a bunch of security-related validation bugs. It took longer than I'd like because I've been really really busy lately. So the real credit goes to Title V of the United States Code for making July 4th a federal holiday.

I was recently diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disorder called anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis. It's a "disease of chaos" that completely upturned my life for a couple months. I wrote a blog about it that goes into more detail and discusses prognosis. :-) burntsushi.net/encephalitis/

Calvin and Hobbes "Playing X?" meme:

"Programming mario? I'll show you something interesting."
"The two axes of personality are Wario and Luigi. All items fall along these axes. Mario? Neither Wario nor Luigi. Waluigi? Both." "Yeah..."
"Objective C? Luigi. C++? Wario. Python? Mario. Javascript? Waluigi."
"Despite being low-level and strongly typed, Rust is actually Luigi."

the main reason i don’t like seeing llm pull requests is because it removes the human connection. you can compensate for this with flattery, which is suitably distracting for a guy like me.

9. "don't read directly from your slides" is approximately incorrect. you shouldn't literally put the words you intend to say on your slides, but your slides should summarize what you're saying succinctly. your speech WILL inevitably confuse people, but your text can fix that and catch them back up.

8. your audience will, by default, only be able to think about what they're currently looking at. leverage storytelling techniques to get them to remember things you've said: - break your presentation into titled sections - add a table of contents - repeat the name of the section when you finish it
