This weekend, we published the first parts of our investigation into Florida’s property insurance crisis. What’s most remarkable is that this work was funded almost entirely by an outside donation to our newsroom. This kind of support for local reporting is needed now, more than ever.

We obtained a long-hidden report about insurance company profits, through a legitimate public records request. Now the state Senate says they released it accidentally and have demanded we destroy all copies — and threatened legal action if we don’t comply.

This should be a very big deal. “Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier, who was then Gov. Ron DeSantis’ chief of staff, was at the heart of a scheme that sent money to political committees fighting passage of an amendment to legalize marijuana in 2024, the grand jury found.

Let’s call it what it is: Weaponized search indexing. No need to risk social or legal consequences for burning books or stealing all of today’s edition from the newspaper bin. Just make it impossible to find them online.

I not surprised, but a bogus copyright claim was filed against our story about bogus copyright claims - published <24 hours ago. Somebody involved the District 22 GOP congressional primary is playing dirty games by exploiting federal copyright law to scrub search results of negative coverage.

“Federal copyright law exists for an important reason: to protect original work from being stolen. It was never intended to be weaponized as a loophole to suppress reporting or hide inconvenient truths.”

AI has a limited place in newsrooms. Here’s an example of a good use. Gemini helped me — with my very low programming skills — to write code that scrapes campaign finance data from state and federal portals and formats it into an easy-to-read, interactive database. Human verified and fact checked.

Yup, just as I suspected: It’s a metaphor. “If the kerning is too tight, especially with heavy, bold fonts, it can evoke feelings of claustrophobia, loudness, or even aggression. The text literally feels like it's shouting at the reader, leaving them no room to breathe.”
