So many reasons to see this rare 35mm screening of a 90s classic, but a fairly niche one is it’s also the first film cameo by Dinosaur Jr’s J Mascis (who also features on the soundtrack). bsky.app/profile/lost...

Went to Bristol recently and one of the advantages of a niche interest in modernism is that while the suspension bridge was heaving, both Clifton Cathedral and All Saints (with windows by John Piper) had not a soul to be seen.

Glad to see The Bear still experimenting with form and further developing its characters. Season 4 felt like they were back in the game, though for me nothing can still quite match Jimmy’s banana.

Re-watched Jim Jarmusch’s anthology film Night on Earth, and it still feels original. Had forgotten how amazing Rosie Perez is in the New York section, and in fact just how many great actors he corralled in general. Rome is a weak point, but LA, NYC, Paris and Helsinki more than make up for it.

That seems to be accepted, but Fleming does also seem to have been among the objectors to the demolition of cottages that made way for Goldfinger’s house. Ironically, the Bond films love a bit of modernist architecture (though usually for the villains).

Ha! I was aware of that, though I didn’t know your grandfather was involved. But yes, it’s a great story (and a great house - I especially loved that Goldfinger’s mother insisted on her own very unmodernist furniture when she lived there in her final years).

Rachel Kushner’s The Flamethrowers is my favourite novel of the last decade, so I was nervous about reading Creation Lake. An informant page turner that’s also a meditation on where humans come from and where they’re going, it’s like the prehistoric caves it references - there’s so much in there.
